2 Planet Zorcon Each person needs a job –
Project Director (leads the group) Surveyor (travels & collects resources) Data Collector (tallies & records the data) Resource Specialist (instructs as to which resources to collect) Security (guards collected resources) -- The sixth person will be a Government Inspector!

3 Planet Zorcon NOW-Data Collector – write the names of each person on the sheet by their role

4 Renewable or Nonrenewable?
Nonrenewable resources- limited natural resources that cannot be replaced (within a generation) Once they are gone-they are gone-forever. Examples- oil, minerals, soil.

5 Renewable or Nonrenewable?
Renewable resources- Natural resources that can be replaced by human effort. They can be used up without proper management. Examples: forests, fish, wildlife, agriculture, plants, animals.

6 Renewable or Nonrenewable?
Nonexhausible resources- can last forever regardless of human activities. Examples-sunlight, surface water, air.

7 Resources Now, as a group, decide whether the resources on your “Resource Inventory Worksheet” are: RENEWABLE (R) NON-RENEWABLE (N-R) NON-EXHAUSTABLE (N-E) And write them in the correct column.

9 You are experiencing life on earth in the year 2094.
Most of the earth’s resources have been depleted and nearly all water is polluted.

10 A new planet has been discovered-it has plenty of resources and is pollution-free!
THE PLANET ZORCON

11 No one knows what resources are available but the first trip is about to take place.
Pay attention Surveyors. You will be on the first trip to Zorcon. Wait for my signal.

12 When it is time, you will start on the spaceship line with a cup and spoon. After landing, you will rush to the planet surface and collect resources.

13 Trip 1 to Planet Zorcon Surveyors – you have 15 seconds to go to the planet and gather as many resources as you can –One at a time using the spoon! When done, the group counts the resources and tells the Data Collector.

14 WARNINGS! Do not steal any resources-the fine is to have all resources taken away No Cheating-you will loose your resources and/or points Everyone participates-no distractions No spoons or cups in your mouth Discipline yourself so inspectors don’t have to!

15 Trip 1 Government inspectors come to the planet. Surveyors come to the spaceship line and get a cup and spoon. You will have 15 seconds. Ready Set Collect

17 Trip 2 to Planet Zorcon Before going, decide as a group what you want your Project Director wants to tell the Surveyor to collect. You will have 10 seconds

18 Trip 2 Project Director and Surveyor come to the spaceship line with a cup and a spoon. NO MORE THAN 3 RESOURCES can be scooped up with the spoon at a time. Watch out for fines! You will have 10 seconds Ready Set Collect

19 Data collector records Resources stop counting after 50 of an item (wheat/corn) -you have too much and you are just wasting resources WHEAT CORN COTTON TREES EDIBLE OIL ? DOMESTIC ANIMALS SEAFOOD LEAD IRON ZINC CRUDE OIL COPPER GOLD SILVER ALUMINUM WATER UNKNOWN

20 Trip 3 to Planet Zorcon You will have 10 seconds this time! Project Director – lead a discussion with your group on what the group members need to be able to improve their life on earth. What can you “do” or “make” with your resources? What are you missing? Create a plan for your next trip. Data Collector will accompany the Surveyor and Resource Specialist . Both the Surveyor and the Resource Specialist can bring a spoon and all resources must fit in a single cup. They must be picked up NO MORE THAN 5 RESOURCES with the spoon at a time. No “scooping” or you will be fined.

21 Trip 3 Data Collector, Resource Specialist and Surveyor come to the spaceship line and get a cup and 2 spoons. You will have 10 sec. Ready Set Collect

23 Trip 4 to Planet Zorcon This is the last time we are going the planet. Send the security officer and one other person to go! All items must be scooped up with the spoons and all resources must fit in a cup. Important Info! The unknown mineral (spaghetti) has been identified as a rare mineral that has special properties. It has water as it largest part of its structure. The mineral can be used indefinitely. Only pieces that are not broken will count!!

24 Trip 4 Security and one other team member come to the spaceship line. Bring a cup and 2 spoons. You will have 5 seconds. Ready Set Collect

26 Now that we had fun, what’s the point?

27 CONCLUSION: The future of our planet depends on human behaviors we can control and our reaction to things we can’t control, such as the weather and earthquakes.

28 Discussion Questions:
What did you collect? Why? What challenges did you experience? What about the role of the government? How evenly were the resources distributed?

29 Discussion Questions:
What does the new planet look like now? Would you be able to live there? Why didn’t anyone think to protect the planet? Are the damages your fault or the government’s fault?

30 Discussion Questions:
What was your main motivation for the last trip? Which resources were most valuable? Why? Which resources are the least valuable? What do you have too much of? Can you restore the new planet to its original condition? What resource specialists would be needed?

31 Discussion Questions:
What careers are in the area of natural resources, both in mining and growing? Ecologist, economist, hazardous waste technician, horticulturist, research analyst, statistician, forester, truck driver, water quality specialist, park naturalist, miner, heavy machine operator, resource specialist, biologist security personnel, surveyor, engineer
