2. NPS - new narcotic or psychotropic drug, in pure form or in preparation, that is not controlled by the United Nations drug conventions, but which may pose a public health threat comparable to that posed by substances listed in these conventions'
Sold in smartshops, growshops or on-line, between February 2007 and April 2013 – legislation changes (decree-law Nº 54/2013 of 17th April)
According to recent reports from EU Early Warning System both variety and quantity of NPS on Europe’s market still increasing. In 2015 were identified 98 new psychoactive substances in the market such as synthetic cannabinoids, stimulants, hallucinogens and opioids (EMCDDA, 2016). The growth in the market is also responsible for the increase in serious harms such as intoxications, deaths (EMCDDA, 2016). NPS consumption also include broader social harms that still requiring attention and further research.

3. Nightlife settings are ‘therefore relevant to developing an understanding and response to NPS use and provide opportunities to target recreational and harmful drug use’
Interviews and observation - the experiences of NPS from nightlife key-agents: the party workers
Despite the overall use of NPS in nightlife settings is relatively low compared to traditional club drugs (Stephenson and Richardson, 2014), the use of drugs and alcohol has been associated with an increased risk of a range of health and social harms such as injury, aggressive behaviour, unsafe / unwanted sex and driving under the influence (Charlois, 2009).
This work is part of a research work in progress in the scope of a PhD in Sociology and builds on an earlier study conducted on NPS users prior to legislative controls (Silva, 2012).
