Levels of Consciousness:
EQ: How do we assess our awareness level of the world around us?

How Conscious Are We? At various points and for various reasons, our level of consciousness can change. This may be due to varying factors… A. Tiredness B. Health Reasons C. Sobriety D. ???

Nonconscious Level: Mental activities that we are not able to access are taking place at the Nonconscious Level. Simple Examples: -Breathing -Making a snap decision -Reflexes Complex Examples: -Moving one’s fingers on a musical instrument while reading/playing music -Driving while listening to the radio and talking on the phone (what are you focused on?)

Preconscious Level: Mental activities that we are not yet conscious of, but of which we can easily become conscious. These ideas are usually brought into your consciousness by something within your conscious level. Examples: -An important date (August 1st) -Remembering that date with your ex when you see Johnny Depp because you went to see Pirates of the Caribbean Episode 19 with them. -A prompting question.

Unconscious (Subconscious) Level:
Mental activities that influences consciousness, but is not accessible by consciousness. Mainly proposed by Freud and other Psychoanalysts This view is not accepted by most psychologists. Examples: -The deeply seated and aggressive violent and sexual impulses of individuals -Repressed memories that may impact our actions and behavior
