Do Now: Take out notebook, homework, and pencil
Start a new Do Now page At top of page write Do Nows for week of 1/22 Pick a gland and describe the hormone it produces and/or what it does for your body
2
Essential Questions What is the main function of the muscular system?
What are the main organs in this system?
3
Glue the notes on page
4
Muscular System Consists of over 640 muscles Main function is to:
Allow movement in the body Maintain Posture Stabilize joints Generates heat Found all over the body, even in other organs Serve to either move the body or move substances throughout the body
5
Properties of Muscles Excitable or irritable- capable of receiving and responding to stimulation by nerves Contractible- capable of shortening Extensible- can be stretched without damage Elasticity- able to return to its resting shape Adaptability- can change in response to use, gets bigger or smaller
6
Muscle Movement Voluntary- controlled consciously by a person such as speaking, walking, writing, you choose to do it Involuntary- controlled by the unconscious part of the brain such as heartbeat, intestine moving waste, breathing, you can not stop it from happening (and survive!!!)
7
Notes break You have been watching me as I taught the lesson. Think back over the last five minutes and make a list of all of the voluntary AND involuntary movements I have made Name the movement and label it as which type it is
8
Types of Muscles Cardiac- forms the wall of the heart and controls heartbeat– involuntary Smooth- weakest of all muscles, found in organs that perform grinding, churning, or moving - involuntary Skeletal- connects muscles to the bones and helps move the bones which moves the body - voluntary
9
Systems Working Together
The muscular system work with the nervous and skeletal system in order for voluntary muscle movements to occur. Without the bones there would not be enough stability to hold up your body Without the muscles the bones would not be able to move Without the nerves the muscles would never get the signal from the brain to move
10
Watch video on muscular system
11
Do this activity on page
Think of different movements you make throughout the day. Choose THREE voluntary and THREE involuntary movements you make and explain why they are classified as each Work on study guide for the Mid Unit test which will be next class
