Emerson Emerson appealed to both intellectuals and the general public – works were not only for entertainment but were also not only for the educated. He appealed to many readers. He did much more than poetry. Essays, speeches, philosophy, etc. Watch how Emerson uses figures of speech, imaginative comparisons of things that are basically unalike. Emerson often compares abstract things or ideas to ordinary things

Nature Read and annotate “Nature” on pages 182-183
Imagery: the use of language to evoke a picture or a concrete sensation of a person (hits on one of the senses) Notice how Emerson will SHOW the reader scenes of nature rather than TELL the reader. Read and annotate “Nature” on pages Which of the senses does Emerson hit in lines 7-12? What does Emerson say about how our own moods can affect the way we look at nature? List at least 3 lines where imagery can be found and which of the senses they hit. On page 187 answer questions 1, and 6.

Self-Reliance Turn to page 185. First look at the image on the top of the page. Then answer the following questions based on your knowledge of Romanticism. 1. Is the painting a realistic or romantic vision of farm life? Why? What might be the artist’s motivation for creating the painting in this way? Now read Emerson’s self-reliance. Take notes on a separate sheet of paper as you read. Every 3-4 paragraphs you should be writing down what you have understood or are confused about with Emerson’s writing. On page answer questions 1, 3, and 4 for self-reliance
