9.07 Activity 50 Points
2
Instructions https://www.geogebra.org/download
Click on the Windows download and open when finished Click ‘Run’ (this may take a minute, be patient) Find a picture of a parabola in real life on the internet Choose a picture that you like and save it to your computer
3
Instructions (continued)
Open your picture and drag it into GeoGebra Right click your picture and click on ‘Object Properties’ Click on ‘color’ and adjust the opacity until you can still see your picture, but also the grid underneath (about 50%) Line your parabola up with the graph Place a point at the vertex Now you have a vertex (h,k), think of a quadratic equation in vertex form that would closely match your parabola. Use y=A(x-h)2+k Type it into the ‘input’ box and hit the enter key If you didn’t quite match the parabola, you can change the A value of the equation in the input box
4
Instructions (continued)
Once you have the equation, identify the vertex, axis of symmetry, domain, and range of the parabola (see rubric if you are confused on how to find any of these Find the x and y intercepts using the ‘Intersect Two Objects’ icon. Click on the x-axis and the parabola to find the x intercepts and click on the y-axis and the parabola to find the y intercepts Find the discriminant and the zeroes using the quadratic formula (see rubric) Write a paragraph or two describing your image, why you chose it, and how you figured out the equation for it. Write a few sentences describing what you thought of the activity Write a few sentences describing what you learned from the activity Check Rubric on next page to make sure you have everything before submitting
5
Rubric Title (2 points) at the top of the page
Screenshot of your image w/ parabola (8 points) ‘shift print screen’ Equation in Standard Form y=Ax2+Bx+C (4 points) should be on your picture from GeoGebra Equation in Vertex Form y=A(x-h)2+k (4 points) what you typed in (h,k) is the point you put on the picture Vertex (h,k) (2 points) your point on the picture Axis of Symmetry (2 points) x=h Domain (2 points) write ‘All Reals’ Range (2 points) y ≥ or ≤ k x-intercepts (4 points) must work out and show all steps using the quadratic formula (decimal answers) y-intercepts (4 points) (0, c) ‘c’ is from your standard form Value of Discriminate (4 points) must work out and show all steps 1-2 paragraphs describing your image, why you chose it & how you figured out the equation for it. (8 points) What did you think of the activity? (2 points) What did you learn? (2 points)

Submitting Your Project
You can either copy and paste the picture you created in GeoGebra into a word document, type everything up, save it, and submit it online OR You can print your picture and write everything out by hand, then submit in the green bin. Once finished, click on the following link and complete the survey
