4 M1 7.7 Circle “C” Racing Pigs Objectives: Build an understanding that operations with polynomials are comparable to operations with integers by adding and subtracting quadratic expressions and by adding, subtracting, and multiplying linear expressions. Interpret expressions that represent a quantity in terms of its context. b. Interpret a linear, exponential, or quadratic expression made of multiple parts as a combination of entities to give meaning to an expression.

5 Define: Vertex x-intercept y-intercept Axis of Symmetry Maximum
Minimum Algebra Tiles? Graph Paper? Use manipulatives to explain.

6 Answer #1 individually…
THINK…how does the perimeter relate to sides and area?

7 1. Write a function to represent the area of the pen
1. Write a function to represent the area of the pen. Be sure to clearly label what each of your variables represents. 2. Would a long skinny rectangular pen have more or less area than a square pen? Explain how you know. Algebra Tiles? Graph Paper? Use manipulatives to explain. The more “square” the pen gets the greater the area. The values of the length and width are getting closer together so the product is greater.

8 With your seat buddy, answer #3-5
With your seat buddy, answer #3-5. Be prepared to share your answer at the board. 3. What are the x-intercepts of the function? How do the x-intercepts relate to the context? The x-intercepts are at 0 and 40. The x-intercepts are the max and min values of the width of the pen. Algebra Tiles? Graph Paper? Use manipulatives to explain.

9 4. What is the maximum area for the pen
4. What is the maximum area for the pen? What are the dimensions that would give the pen the maximum area? (The pigs deserve the biggest and best!) Show this maximum using both a table and a graph. The maximum area for the pen is 800 ft2. The dimensions would be 20 ft x 40 ft. Algebra Tiles? Graph Paper? Use manipulatives to explain.

10 5. What is the relationship between the x-intercepts and the vertex of the function?
The x coordinate of the vertex is halfway between the two x-intercepts. Algebra Tiles? Graph Paper? Use manipulatives to explain.

11 It would be positive since the graph opens up.
Exit ticket for students: (0,6) (2,0) and (6,0) (4,) or x > 4 It would be positive since the graph opens up.
