1
Water Security or insecurity
2
Important terms Arable land - land capable of being ploughed and used to grow crops Desertification - the process by which fertile land becomes desert, typically as a result of drought, deforestation, or inappropriate agriculture Drought - a prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall; a shortage of water resulting from this. Deforestation - the removal of a forest or stand of trees where the land is thereafter converted to a non-forest use. Examples of deforestation include conversion of forestland to farms, ranches, or urban use. The most concentrated deforestation occurs in tropical rainforests
3
Step 1 of desertification
Semi-arid region – little but some rainfall Vegetation lives in a fragile state with barely enough to survive
4
Step 2 Desertification Farming and burning wood in a semi-arid region
5
Step 3 of Desertification
During desertification the natural ground cover (grass and some trees) are either permanently removed or replaced with crops. Crops do not keep top soil in place like natural grass Worst case example in history Dust Bowl – USA 1930s
6
Step 4 Topsoil is gone Natural water cycles and flora that stores water are disrupted The damage is done and you now have a desert
