1 Project 4: Website Accessibility and Usability Evaluation Focusing on Students with Disabilities
Group: Chris, Daniel, Jeff, Kathy, Shirelle, Vincent Customers: Somphone, Todd

2 Problem Statement Evaluating navigation and accessibility to critical information Is the site usable for users without disabilities? Test current site against users with specific disabilities Want to see if they can access information easily Check to see if the site is missing any information that may be desired for these particular students Testing specifically students with visual impairments and fine motor skills

3 Our Evaluation Approaches
Web accessibility- “Web accessibility refers to the inclusive practice of removing barriers that prevent interaction with, or access to websites, by people with disabilities.” Overall goal- provide users with various disabilities to access information in the easiest way possible POUR (Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, Robust) Examples: Perceivable- text alternatives Operable- keyboard shortcuts Understandable- clear, readable information laid out in a predictable fashion Robust- compatibility with disability tools

4 Usability Problems We’ve Encountered
Lack of consistency Subcategories and links don’t follow a consistent pattern in how behave Links aren’t all working Not updated- site will Phone numbers or addresses are either unidentifiable or simply not given Web Accessibility Issues Keyboard shortcuts missing general site functionality Image alternative text does not always match up to images Brief list, still need to test further

5 Methods Survey Usability Testing Interview For initial info
What device do you use? What type of assistive software? Completed electronically using Google forms Usability Testing Using participant’s own equipment Video recording if possible At UCI and off-site Interview Semi-structured Post testing In-person if possible

6 Types of Users Types of Users will be students with disabilities
At this point we anticipate: 6 participants total 4 UCI Students Likely familiar with the DSC services Experience with the process of applying for those services on the DSC website 2 Community Members Likely unfamiliar or new to the DSC website Uncertainty if we can find more participants

7 Subgroups 3 sub groups Users with total blindness Users with low vision Users with low fine motor skills Of the 4 UCI Students, all 4 of them are visually impaired 2 low vision 2 blind 1 user also uses a wheelchair and has low fine motor skills For the community members 1 user is blind 1 user has low fine motor skills

8 Phases of Research Accessibility Analysis Survey User Study Interview
Group Evaluation: each team member analyzed a section of the website for usability issues that may arise Survey Focuses on how familiar participants are with the website currently as well as how they navigate websites in general (keyboard shortcuts, special software/hardware equipment, etc.) User Study Have the participants actually run through a scenario/s on the site, see for ourselves how easy it is for them to navigate the website [will try to have both a video and screen recording] Interview Exit interview, focusing on their experience, suggestions/comments about site, etc. [for re-evaluation purposes] Evaluation Analyze our findings to suggest improvements for the DSC website Report Present our findings to our customers

9 Approximately 1 hour meeting
User Contact Contacted through DSC (Somphone) As of now: Survey Interview/Observation Where we will meet Local users will meet in the DSC conference room Offsite users will meet on location El Camino College Braille Institute Approximately 1 hour meeting

10 What will be asked Survey sent out asking initial questions to familiarize ourselves with the users who will be testing Will structure questions around survey results, and user study Interview/Observation Phase 1 Tasks We will ask them to bring their personal devices Focus on critical operations of the DSC website Account creation Navigation Accessing student resources Phase 2 Questions

11 Time Plan Finish group evaluations of DSC website
Draft scenarios for User Studies User testing Pre-final project presentation Week 3 Weeks 4 - 5 Weeks 6 - 8 Week 9 - Finals Week Draft and send out initial contact surveys Draft interview questions Interviews Final report

12 Thank You
