Elementary Gifted Services
Identified students in grades 3, 4, and 5 have the opportunity to participate in verbal (reading and social studies) and/or nonverbal (mathematics and science) pull-out classes. These classes are taught during the school day, for approximately 30 minutes twice per cycle or 45 minutes, once per 6-day cycle and are taught by an elementary gifted services specialist. Monica

122 or higher Verbal CogAT (V) and a score at the 80th percentile in previous year or above on NWEA Reading OR Verbal CogAT (V) and at or above the 95th percentile in previous year on NWEA Reading Two NWEA Reading Scores at or above the 95th percentile in previous year Qualifying portfolio completed at school Please note that student scores are reviewed annually in the spring to begin service the following fall. English/Language Arts Standards integrated into the unit: Students will form opinions and support them via text. Students will compose opinion writings and support their viewpoints with sound reasons. Students will compare and contrast two reading selections. Students will identify the main idea of a literary piece and support this with details. Colleen

English/Language Arts Standards integrated into the unit: Determine the main idea of a text, and support it with key details. Produce clear and coherent writing. Determine the meaning of domain-specific words. Explain what a text is saying by drawing upon explicit details or inferences. Colleen

5th Grade Verbal Persuasive Speaking and Writing Debate and Mock Trial
Students explore viewpoint and recognize that different people have different viewpoints. Students create a RAFT writing from a different viewpoint: R=Role, A=Audience, F=Format, and T=Topic Students learn about persuasive strategies and incorporate them into a persuasive essay. Brian Debate and Mock Trial Students prepare organized arguments with supporting details on an assigned topic and position (pro or con). Students apply their reasoning an persuasive skills as participants in a mock trial.

Primary Education Thinking Skills (PETS)
The curriculum is designed to promote thinking in a variety of topic areas Students will experience challenge and learn to persevere. Students often will work in teams. PETS will be delivered to all first-grade classrooms twice a cycle for 30 minutes. Monica

PETS The gifted specialist will prepare all materials, give an overview of each lesson to the first-grade team, and teach the lesson. Having the whole class participate helps students learn from each other and helps teaching staff discover additional student strengths that can be cultivated throughout the school day. The PETS lessons are highly engaging to students, generally starting with a story that poses a problem or mystery to solve. Monica

Early Entrance to Kindergarten
Children who become five (5) years of age on or before September 1 of the calendar year in which the school year commences are eligible to enter kindergarten. Students who demonstrate superior academic readiness will be considered for early entrance to kindergarten if they will be turning five (5) years of age between September 1 and August 31 of that school year. Deadline: May 1 of prior year Monica

RAMP Rochester Accelerated Math Program
Middle school math classes: Math 6, pre-algebra, linear algebra Starting for fall 2017, students were allowed to choose accelerated math (pre-algebra) at grade 6. Students in grade 5 will be identified prior to the end of the school year. Only students who qualify for double acceleration will be notified via . More information will be sent on Skyward in December and January regarding the process for identifying students for accelerated math. RAMP/Middle school parent night January 18, 2018, 6:30 pm at Kellogg.

Highly Gifted Program at Friedell and Kellogg Middle Schools
Students considering this option must meet ONE of the following criteria: CogAT composite score of 132 or higher CogAT composite score of 128 or higher AND NWEA test total in Reading at or above the 97th NPR AND NWEA test total in Math at or above the 97th NPR (scores from spring of grade 4 and onward) A qualifying portfolio of exemplary work completed at school under the direction of the Gifted Specialist.
