1 Individual Learner Characteristics.
Learning for Success (ED1161). Session 2. Friday, November 30, 2018Friday, November 30, 2018

2 The Aims of Today’s Session…..
To consider your individual SWOT analysis. To examine some individual learner characteristics. To complete and analyse Honey & Mumford’s LSQ. To upload our personal profile to WOLF. Friday, November 30, 2018Friday, November 30, 2018

3 What are Individual Learning Styles?
Learners may demonstrate preferences for particular learning styles. Honey, P. & Mumford, A. (1986) define 4 styles: Activists. Reflectors. Theorists. Pragmatists. Friday, November 30, 2018Friday, November 30, 2018

4 Activists. Learners with strong ‘activist’ tenancies:
Like to get stuck in and have a go. Enjoy workshop or laboratory exercises. Tend to be hasty & get bored with theory. They dislike fine detail. Friday, November 30, 2018Friday, November 30, 2018

5 Reflectors. Learners who tend towards the ‘reflector’ style:
Like to watch others, think, mull over. Always carry out painstaking research before they begin. Don’t like deadlines. Don’t take shortcuts. Friday, November 30, 2018Friday, November 30, 2018

6 Theorists. A strong theorist will tend to:
Enjoy being intellectually stretched. Require time to methodically analyse & probe a situation. Dislike unstructured, unchallenging activities. Dislike being asked to act or decide without a basis or sound knowledge. Friday, November 30, 2018Friday, November 30, 2018

7 Pragmatist. Pragmatist learners tend to:
Enjoy activities that are directly relevant to them. Require immediate opportunities to implement what they have learnt. Dislike learning that is not related to needs. Dislike situations where they feel that people are ‘going round in circles’. Friday, November 30, 2018Friday, November 30, 2018

8 The Ideal Learner. The Ideal Learner is: Adaptable.
Is strong in all four learning style categories. Performs well in practical, academic & reflective situations. Is an efficient and effective problem solver. Friday, November 30, 2018Friday, November 30, 2018

9 Activity 1. Complete Honey & Mumford’s learning style questionnaire (LSQ). What is your individual learning style preference? Does this confirm your own view about yourself? How do you intend to become a more adaptable learner? Friday, November 30, 2018Friday, November 30, 2018

10 What Other Factors Effect Learning?
Social Factors. Social Class. Race & Ethnicity. Gender. Physical Factors. Disability. Environment. Resources. Psychological Factors. Personality. Motivation. Friday, November 30, 2018Friday, November 30, 2018

11 Motivation. Motivation exists at different levels & is dependent on many factors: Physical. Social. External. Internal. Friday, November 30, 2018Friday, November 30, 2018

12 Activity 2. List the factors that motivate you as an individual. Categorise them in the following factor groups: Physical. Social. External. Internal. Discuss motivating factors in groups of 4 and produce a definitive list. Friday, November 30, 2018Friday, November 30, 2018

13 Motivation & Group Work
Group/Team members will remain motivated if: Their strengths are utilised. They are valued by other team members. Team members encourage each other. Their learning style preferences are considered. Friday, November 30, 2018Friday, November 30, 2018

14 Activity 3. Place your personal profile on WOLF. This must include a digital photograph – if you don’t wish to have your own photograph on the WOLF profile you should photograph and upload something to represent you. This may be something personal such as a ‘hat’ that you always wear or it may be something more abstract. Friday, November 30, 2018Friday, November 30, 2018

15 The End. Friday, November 30, 2018Friday, November 30, 2018
