Essential Skills graduation requirements are based on when a student is first enrolled in grade 9, referred to as the “cohort year”
Students with an cohort must meet the Essential Skill of Reading requirement to earn a regular or modified diploma
Three approved assessment options: OAKS, other standardized tests, work samples (2)

6. The District Perspective
5-10% of students have met via work samples or appear to be on track to do so
Insufficient credits may be a significant factor
In some cases, students are being shifted to the Modified Diploma path
More students likely to come back for summer session or 5th year of HS, to complete requirements (credits and/or ES)
Use of data teams has been helpful in identifying students that may need intervention
Work samples have been very resource intensive, both in terms of task development and scoring
