1
Electronegativity and the types of bonds that form.
2
What is Electronegativity?
Strength of attraction for electrons of other atoms. What is Electronegativity?
4
Electronegativity differences between atoms form a continuum of the types of bonds from non-polar covalent to polar covalent to ionic.

6
E-neg difference of 2.0 and over = IONIC
up to & including 0.4 = non-polar covalent between 0.5 and 1.7 polar covalent 2.0 and over = IONIC
7
Use e-neg differences to order these from the least polar covalent bond to the most polar covalent bond … and put Ionics into their own category N NaH HCl H2O HF KI CsF NaCl
8
DON’T just look at e-neg differences to determine to of bond
DON’T just look at e-neg differences to determine to of bond. Look at what its made from and the properties of the compound
9
Ionic Covalent High melting point temps Angular crystals Hard crystalline solids at STP Soluble in water Doesn’t conduct electricity as a solid, but will conduct if melted or as an (aq). Low melting point temps Amorphous solids Soft solids at STP. May dissolve in water, but usually no. Doesn’t conduct electricity in any state.
