3 How can we understand poetry?

4 I can use details to determine the theme of the poem.

5 The lesson, or message, the poet wants you to take away from the reading.

6 YOU’RE IN THE HOT SEAT! Today we're going to play a game called "You're in the Hot Seat!" When I ask you to look, you will all check under your chair to see if you have either a poem or a theme statement. If you don't have one, you'll help the friend at your table that does. Once you have your statement or poem, you need to find the poem or statement that matches. We've worked with theme before, so you do have some background knowledge to help you. I have chosen poems that won't have hidden themes. This means you should be able to infer the theme easily. Ready? Go! Activity time minutes…(4 poems---I will print and laminate a set for each teacher) One Ss will present the Theme to the class (I’m going to have those with the THEME at their desks.

7 SECRET...You listen/recite poetry all the time!
Depending on how long the HOT SEAT activity lasts, you may or may not want to click on the girl….there is about 3 minutes with 4 different snippets from Disney songs to determine theme.

8 Link to the Tim McGraw video is on the picture
Link to the Tim McGraw video is on the picture...the first verse and chorus is less than 2 minutes...use this to show how often they read -or sing- poetry. Ask what the theme is...live in the moment/carpe diem. Identify details to support the theme (L3, L6, L8, and 3rd stanza)

9 Ss will read the poem independently
Ss will read the poem independently. May have to discuss “barren” but should be able to use context clues. Ss will identify theme and discuss with partner. Discuss in class the theme - Do not give up/carpe diem...similar to previous. With partner, discuss the lines/details that helped you determine the theme.

10 Let’s practice together!
“When You Are Old”

11 Partner Work “If We Must Die”

12 Part A What is the central idea of the poem?
A man encourages his allies to fight for what is right as they fight against a stronger power. A person gives a speech about war and the horrors of battle. A man is dying, but shares his regrets one last time. A man tells his fellow fighters to kill as many enemies as they can.

13 Part B What detail from the poem best supports your answer to part A.
“And for their thousand blows deal on death-blow!” “What though before us lies the open grave?” “Like men we’ll face the murderous cowardly pack...but fighting back!” “If we must die, let it not be like hogs/Hunted and penned in an inglorious spot.”

14 Part A: What is the theme of the poem?
Death is a terrifying experience. Fight for what you believe in. Always fight your enemies. Don’t make fun of your enemies.

15 Part B: Which detail from the poem best supports your answer to part A?
“While round us bark the mad and hungry dogs/ Making their mock at our cursed lot.” “O let us nobly die/ So that our precious blood may not be shed/ in vain.” “Though far outnumbered let us show brave/ And for their thousand blows deal one death-blow!” “What though before us lies but the open grave?”
