Warm Up: Themes in Harrison Bergeron (Post-It Note)
List all the abstract topics this story dealt with (5 mins). See if you can come up with any I didn’t… Equality, fairness, family, law, order, government, talent, potential, competition, beauty, intelligence, bravery/cowardice, privacy, justice, oppression, rights, technology, desperation, standing up for what’s right (protesting), meekness, brainwashing, bullying
3
Pick TWO of your Abstract Nouns…
Turn them into two theme statements… (12 minutes) They have to… Be COMPLETE SENTENCES! Contain at least one ABSTRACT noun (>1 is great!!) Be a lesson/truth that “HB” was trying to tell us Don’t include the characters, but rather what can we LEARN from them? E.g. 1.) Brainwashing ruins family relationships (two abstract nouns); 2.)Power in government needs to be limited. If you use TWO abstract nouns in one statement, you don’t have to write the second.
4
Let’s Vote! 1st round: Thumbs up/thumbs sideways (Thumbs up proceed to next round) 2nd round: Vote only two times for the two you like best (since you’ve heard them all at this point). 3rd round: Tiebreaker/run-off between two highest voted themes. Pick a winner. Extra credit
5
Highest-Voted Themes 7th period:
Equality is not always the same thing as fairness. Talent is in the eye of the beholder Too much control over people can lead to chaos.
