A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea.
What is a noun? A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea. Nouns can be proper, naming a specific person, place, thing, or idea (Chicago, Bob, Monday). Nouns can also be common, naming any person, place, thing, or idea (city, man, day).

5 types of nouns: Compound
Made up of more than one word May be written as one word, a hyphenated word, or as two or more words Ex: backyard, mother-in-law, Beth Anne

Names an idea, a feeling, a quality, or a characteristic Cannot be perceived by one of the 5 senses Ex: freedom, love, honor

Names a person, place, or thing that can be perceived by one or more of the 5 senses (sight, sound, taste, touch, smell) Ex: desk, book, person

Names who or what owns or has something Can be formed by adding ‘s or by adding only an apostrophe if the plural form already ends in s Ex: Mike’s, books’

Names a group of individuals Ex: family, audience, team, crowd, class Singular if talking about the group as a unit Plural if talking about the individual members of the group
