5 Sentence Forms  A simple sentence has a single clause. Clouds hid the stars.  A compound sentence has two or more simple sentences joined together: The flies emerged and they flew about.

6 Sentence Forms A complex sentence has a main clause which can stand alone as a sentence, plus a dependant clause which cannot stand alone: “They looped around me, sounding like sputtering, single-prop airplanes.”
