Brief History of OE Earliest form of recorded language
Germanic roots because Anglo-Saxons originated in Germany before coming to England and pushing out Celtic-speaking inhabitants Each letter is pronounced, there are no silent letters Prononciations are different than what we know today (prior to great vowel shift, so vowels had different sounds) Examples of vowel pronunciations: fōt (Old English ) —— foot (Modern English) cēne (Old English ) —— keen (Modern English) hū (Old English ) —— how (Modern English) Beowulf is the most famous work written in Old English
