9 Topic Objectives Determine your values, interests, aptitudes, and abilities. Explain the importance of a good self-concept in choosing a career. Identify your personality and learning styles and match them to career choices.

10 Your LifestyLe Goals By getting to know yourself, you can plan your future and choose a career you will want to pursue. Lifestyle Goals: The ways you want to spend your time, energy, and resources in the future.

11 Your Values Becoming aware of your values is important in knowing yourself. Values: Your beliefs and principles. Values define who you are, shape your attitudes and choices, and help you set priorities.

13 Your Interests You should pay attention to your interests when choosing a career. Your interests are the activities you enjoy. If you are not sure what your interests are, one way to find out is to try new activities.

14 Data, People, or Things? Identifying your interests can help your recognize what you would enjoy on the job. Data careers include: accounting, library, or physics. Data: Refers to information, knowledge, ideas, facts, words, symbols, figures, and statistics. People careers include: teaching, counseling, or training. Things careers include: handling physical objects such as instruments, tools, plants, or machinery.

15 Your Aptitudes and Abilities
A potential for learning a certain skill. Ability: A skill you have already developed.

16 Your Personality and Learning Styles
Your unique combination of attitudes, behaviors, and characteristics. Knowing your personality type can help you understand your natural abilities and which careers would suit you best. Learning Styles: The different ways in which people naturally think and learn. Being aware of your own learning styles helps you to determine the best way to learn something.
