High Performance T8 Systems Understanding HPT8 Systems What are HPT8 SYSTEMS? What are the Features and Benefits of HPT8 Systems?

High Performance T8 Systems What are High Performance T8 Systems? HPT8 Systems are lighting fixtures that incorporate high-efficiency ballasts and four- foot, 32 Watt high-lumen T8 lamps. HPT8 Systems can significantly reduce lighting energy costs by up to 40%, compared to old T12 or standard T8 systems. HPT8 Systems also provide performance benefits and maintenance savings compared to old T12 or standard T8 systems.

High Performance T8 Systems What Makes HPT8 Lamps Better? HPT8 lamps are four-foot, 32 Watt T8 lamps producing at least 3,100 initial lumens. (compared to 2850 lumens for standard T8 lamps) Higher lamp efficacy means more lumens per watt: >90 MLPW (instant start) and >88 MPLW (programmed start) Lamps have a long life – 24,000 hours. (compared to 20,000 hours for standard T8 lamps)

High Performance T8 Systems What Makes HPT8 Lamps Better? The lamps offer extended lumen maintenance – at least 2,900 lumens maintained over the life of the lamp. (compared to 2,600 for standard T8 lamps) The lamps provide high color rendering with a CRI >81. (compared to 75 for standard T8 lamps) These numbers are even more impressive when comparing HPT8 lamps to old T12s.

High Performance T8 Systems HPT8 Lamp Benefits Longer life of lamps means fewer lamp changes and reduced maintenance and disposal costs. Light levels are maintained over a longer period of time due to higher mean lumen output. High CRI lamps make merchandise, people, and surroundings look better.

High Performance T8 Systems Ordering HPT8 Lamps HPT8 Lamps are available from most manufacturers. Many manufacturers have their own brand name for HPT8 lamps. A complete listing of HPT8 lamps that meet these criteria can be found at www.designlights.org. Some utilities offer incentives for HPT8 lamps and/or ballasts.

High Performance T8 Systems What Makes HPT8 Ballasts Better? HPT8 Ballasts are high-efficiency electronic ballasts that are able to drive T8 lamps with less energy than standard T8 ballasts. Regardless of the Ballast Factor (BF) or the lamp used, an HPT8 Ballast will reduce the wattage by about 8% compared to a standard T8 Ballast. When combined with 32 Watt HPT8 lamps, they produce similar or more light than standard T8 lamps and ballasts. HPT8 ballasts can significantly reduce energy costs by up to 40%, compared to old T12 and standard T8 ballasts.

High Performance T8 Systems Ordering HPT8 Systems Fixture manufacturers offer HPT8 ballasts as an option when ordering fixtures for stock or projects. Simply specify High Performance T8 or HPT8 when placing your fixture order. A complete listing of HPT8 ballasts that meet these criteria can be found at www.designlights.org NEMA T8 Premium Ballast comply to the same CEE specifications as HPT8 Ballasts and may carry the Premium label. Some utilities offer incentives for HPT8 lamps and/or ballasts.

High Performance T8 Systems HPT8 Systems are Good For Your Customers and You HPT8 Systems help your customers reduce their lighting energy costs by up to 40%. Offering HPT8s to your customers can set you apart from your competition. HPT8 Systems may have a slight up-charge: A higher selling price means increased sales and profit for you. Often this can be offset by incentives for your customer.

High Performance T8 Systems HPT8 Savings Example: 3,000 sq. ft. Retail Store Annual energy cost using (35) 3-lamp fixtures and a target light level of 75 footcandles (fc) for general merchandise: F34T12 System at 60fc : $1,890 F32T8 Standard System at 78fc: $1,441 HPT8 System at 76fc : $1,196 The HPT8 System saves $694 per year in energy costs compared to an old T12 system in the same application. Based on 3,120 operating hours per year and an energy cost of $0.15 per kWh

High Performance T8 Systems The Economics ($$$) of HPT8 Compared to Old T12 or Standard T8 Systems Increased energy savings Reduced payback period Increased Return on Investment Improved Life Cycle Cost Analysis: Reduced energy cost – reduced W/sf Reduced maintenance cost – longer lamp life and lumen maintenance Reduced disposal cost – longer lamp life and lumen maintenance HAPPY CUSTOMERS

High Performance T8 Systems Designing with HPT8 Systems System Options and Designing with HPT8 Ballast Factor Ballast Efficacy Factor

High Performance T8 Systems What is Ballast Factor? Ballast Factor (BF) is a measurement of the ability to produce light (lumens) from fluorescent lamps. BF is defined as the ratio of lamp lumens produced when lamp(s) are operated by a given ballast to the lamp lumens produced when the lamp(s) are operated on a reference ballast. (CEE) BF is indicated as a fraction, such as 0.88BF. The lower the Ballast Factor, the less energy it will use. However, Low BF ballasts will decrease the lumen output. That is why it is important to combine Low BF ballasts with high-lumen lamps.

High Performance T8 Systems HPT8 System Options Low Ballast Factor: The low Ballast Factor offers the lowest wattage solution when comparing the same number of fixtures with the same number of lamps. Example of a 3-lamp fixture: 115W - F34T12 with magnetic energy saving ballast and T12 lamps 88W - F32T8 with standard electronic ballast (.88BF) and standard T8 lamps 73W - F32T8 with low ballast factor HPT8 ballast (.77BF) and HPT8 lamps

High Performance T8 Systems What About Light Output? By combining HPT8 High Performance Lamps with the Low BF Ballasts, similar light output can be obtained for similar fixture types. Example of Mean Lumens for 3-lamp fixtures: F34T12 with magnetic energy saving ballast and T12 lamps: 6210 Lumens F32T8 with standard electronic ballast (.88BF) and standard T8 lamps: 7022 Lumens F32T8 with Low BF HPT8 ballast (.77BF) and HPT8 lamps: 6841 Lumens Result: similar light output with reduced wattage.

High Performance T8 Systems Designing with HPT8 Systems In addition to the Low Ballast Factor Systems, HPT8 ballasts are also available in normal and high ballast factor models. By combining four-foot, 32 Watt HPT8 high- lumen lamps with normal or high ballast factor ballasts, you can often design a project with fewer lamps per fixture or fewer fixtures. Energy costs are reduced while still maintaining recommended light levels.

High Performance T8 Systems Designing with HPT8 Systems HPT8 Systems can be specified with either Instant Start or Program Start Ballasts Instant Start (best stocking option): Better lamp and ballast performance in applications with long hours of operation (> 5 hours per day) Program Start: Better lamp and ballast performance in applications with frequent switching, such as areas with occupancy sensors.

High Performance T8 Systems What is Ballast Efficacy Factor? Ballast Efficacy Factor (BEF) is a measurement used to compare the efficiency of differing lighting systems. BEF is defined as the ratio of ballast factor (BF) to the ballast supply power times 100. (CEE) BEF is a key performance criteria used to qualify HPT8 ballasts. The higher the BEF, the more efficient the ballast is.
