Symbol Pendant & Safety
Jewelry Day 4 Symbol Pendant & Safety
3
Agenda Go over what we did last time.
Go over safety in the lab and with the tools we will be using. Take safety test. Go over how to design a symbol and design some of our own.
4
Last time Last time we learned about positive & negative space
We wrote the definition for symbol into our sketchbooks. Each student practiced coming up with symbol ideas on the in their sketchbooks. We prepared our folders to keep our books in. If you were not here last time you will need to go to the classroom website to catch up in your sketchbook.
5
Electronic device signal
During this time electronic Devices are prohibited. This means cell phones should be put away Headphones should be out and down (not even around you neck). Eyes should be on the teacher not looking down unless to take a note about something.
6
Safety First! You will be working with a number of tools that need to be used appropriately to be safe. In order to do this you must first pass the safety test.
7
Glue First we will work with glue.
Rubber cement is flammable and toxic if used incorrectly. Keep all glue in the main area of the classroom where it is well ventilated and away from any open flames.
8
Drill Next we will be working with an industrial drill. First you must keep your hands out of the way while drilling.
9
Drill Second you must have on safety glasses while drilling at all times.
10
Drill Lastly only two people can be in the lab drilling at a time so take turns.
11
Sawing You will need three tools while sawing your metal. ALWAYS CUT AWAY FROM YOURSELF! A clamp A piece of wood to clamp down to your desk A saw
15
Filing After your piece has been cut out you need to file and sand it so it will not longer have sharp edges. Start with files than move to sand paper.
16
Polishing Once you have filed and sanded your piece you will be ready to polish. Only two people can polish in the lab at one time.
17
Polishing First do not have on any long jewelry or loose clothing that can be caught in the polisher. Second you will need to put a polish on the wheel. Last turn on the wheel and start polishing. Note: It can get hot so if you need to use a clamp to polish.
18
How will you hang your piece?
You need to make a hole in your piece in order to hang it. You will add a jump ring once done.
25
Procedures for Taking a test
Conversation – voice level 0 Help – raise hand and wait quietly Activity – Reading through test and answering questions Movement – remain in your seat at all times Participation – Working the entire time on the test. Success
26
If you need page 7 also that is fine.
Symbol pendant steps On page 6 of your book please put down the steps to making a symbol pendant. If you need page 7 also that is fine.
27
Step 1 Design a symbol that is important to you. The symbol should be all shapes no lines. None of these shapes should be overlapping or touching. Think like you are carving a pumpkin. Cut the design out with an x-acto and glue to sheet metal
28
Step 2 Cut the design out using a size 1 saw blade. Make sure you are using a C-clamp, a wood block, and the saw frame. The saw blade should be out and down when sawing. Use the entire length of the blade or it will break faster.
29
Step 3 Trace and cut out the background piece of tin. File edges, drill jump ring hole, and scuff up the surface so it will take the spray paint. Spray paint one side than let dry the entire day (plan accordingly so you are not waiting for paint to dry).
30
Step 4 Clean up your design. File, sand, buff, polish, and put together with a jump ring. The jump ring will be made from the 22 gage wire using a dowel that is the size of jump ring that you would prefer.
31
Step 5 Fill out your artist statement & rubric. Based on the criteria, how did you do? Make sure you are using your art terms to explain you work. Photograph your work and it to Mrs. Francesconi.
32
Demonstration How to cut sheet metal.
33
Studio Time First: Design your design onto the small shape provided or create your own shape. Second: Cut out your design with an x-acto blade Third: Come get your sheet metal and glue your image to it. Fourth: Begin cutting your sheet metal.
34
Things to turn in & check.
Your ticket out of class is your design glued to your sheet metal. If you have not accomplished this you need to set up a time to come in and catch up.
