JAMESTOWN The first permanent English settlement in North America in 1607 on the James River, named James Fort in honor of King James *this site was selected because they thought it could easily be defended,had plenty of fresh water, and no Powhatan appeared to be using the land.

CAPTAIN JOHN SMITH Soldier, mapmaker, adventurer, and writer. A Virginia Council member, who was also an experienced soldier. He taught the colonists how to protect and provide for themselves.
