People who want to retire to the countryside to relieve them from the ‘rat race’ in the urban areas. They want space to walk and garden
Young families want fresh, clean air and open space for their children
This movement to the rural areas is called
COUNTER-URBANISATION

7. Is the rural Idyll real?
The whole idea of this has meant that some rural areas have got too overcrowded
So many urban people have bought a second home meaning locals in rural areas can no longer afford to buy a home
Some rural villages have got a very small week day population and the population can more than quadruple during the weekend where people with rural second homes work in the city during the week and stay in rural areas at the weekend.
Many rural villages have seen facilities close such as pubs and shops as there is not the year round population to keep them open

8. Meanwhile…some people want to move back to the city
This movement back to inner city areas is called
Re-urbanisation- ‘moving back to the city’
There are 2 main groups who are ‘re-urbanising’

25-35 young and upwardly mobile
What reasons would these groups have for moving back to inner city? Make 2 spider diagrams to show the possible reasons for each group

When people think about moving from one living space to another there are factors that act as ‘strains’ (pull factors) and ‘stresses’ (push factors)
These factors can be driven by political, economic and personal circumstances

16. Why Spain?
Not all people move when they retire, but some do. We have looked at reasons why some may move back into urban areas, now lets look at why some move abroad.
About 900,000 UK pensioners receive their pension money overseas.
Brits have retired to Spain since the 1950s, numbers doing so rapidly increased during the 1980s. They choose Spain for a number of reasons;-

17. Why Spain? Summary
Spain is especially popular for retirees and young families for the following reasons-
It has a much warmer climate than the UK
It has modern and efficient health facilities
The country has excellent transport links, with government subsidies
Lower house prices than in the UK
Household bills are lower than in the UK
Private and state pensions can be transferred directly into Spanish bank accounts
Relatively close to UK, so cheap to fly home
There is a large ex-pat community there so Brits are not culturally isolated

18. The perception of Brits abroad particularly in Spain is that they are trying to live an extended holiday lifestyle
Many do not learn Spanish or inter mix with locals
Many have said Brits are just trying to recreate Britain in Spain with a little extra sun than usual.
More recently with programmes such as ‘a place in the sun’ Brits are moving to rural Spain rather than the traditional coastal locations to take advantage of cheaper prices and more isolated picturesque locations,.
