2 Purpose of Supervision
To ensure orders are carried out promptly and properly Shows that the work is important Enables the leader to change orders on the spot as required Permits the leader to encourage and motivate their followers Makes it possible to immediately detect and correct errors in the work

3 How to Supervise Ask questions prior to commencing to ensure participants understand what is to be done Observe participants’ performance and ensuring they accomplish the objectives of the task/activity as planned Give additional orders and/or instruction in reaction to any needed changes, if required Ensure safety guidelines are followed at all times

4 How to Supervise Ensure participants have all required resources to complete the task Encourage and motivate Examine completed work React to performance and quality of completed work Provide updates to a superior, when required, on any problems or changes that may be required Take notes on important events or elements to consider during future activities

5 Correcting a Mistake Stop them Explain what is wrong and why
Show them the correct way to do the task Provide an opportunity to redo the task the correct way Follow up to examine the complete task and provide feedback

6 When to Supervise Make supervision a standard procedure
Make a detailed examination of the completed task if you were unable to observe the work as it was being done. Two key times to supervise: When individuals are working on unfamiliar tasks When working on tasks when failure would be costly.

7 Whom to Supervise Using a 2IC:
Close Supervision Less Close Supervision People who have done poor work in the past People whose past performance or knowledge is unknown People who have done good work of similar type in the past Using a 2IC: If more than one group is working, appoint a 2IC to supervise the smaller group or the group with the less important task. The leader should check on all groups and delegate supervision to a trusted subordinate while away.

10 Supervisor’s Responsibility Regarding Safety
Importance of Safe Working Habits Prevent accidents and injuries Enforce good housekeeping General Safety Guidelines Water, adventure training, and fight safety Transporting cadet by vehicle Moving cadets by foot on a road or other vehicle track

11 Effective Supervision Techniques
Supervise people while they are working Don’t supervise too closely when people have previously done satisfactory work Give clear directions Know how to adapt to changes and give new orders and instructions when necessary Inspect and comment positively on complete work Use a checklist to inspect Inspect work in progress to correct mistakes with minimal loss of time Have to skills and knowledge required to determine that a job has been done properly
