2 Navigating a College & Career Fair
A lesson for Juniors and Seniors

3 First Impressions Think about a time someone made a first impression on you that was positive or negative. What traits led to that impression?

4 First Impressions First Impressions at a college & career fair are important: Dress/Appearance: There is nothing wrong with dressing up. It shows you are serious about your appearance and exhibits professionalism.

5 First Impressions Introductions: Introduce yourself to college/career representatives when you go to their exhibit. Ex. You walk up to a school’s display. Rep: “Hello, I’m Derek with Such and Such University, please feel free to ask any questions you may have about our school.” You: “Hello Derek. My name is John Q. Student and I am interested in knowing what kinds of clubs and organizations you have at your school.”

6 First Impressions Manners: Be respectful. Use please/thank you. Do not just grab swag off the table and walk off.

7 First Impressions Representing your School: Colleges/employers want to see students excited about their education and future plans

8 Before the Fair (Suggestions for what you can do)
Review the list of schools and employers that will be at the fair. Ask yourself: What size school do I want to attend? Do I have any ideas of a major? Do I want to be in a city/small town? Do I want to start a two-year, four-year, or technical school? What activities do I want to participate in?

9 Before the Fair (Suggestions for what you can do)
Highlight postsecondary options on the list that you think may best answer some of those questions, so you can be sure to visit their table. Make a list/be prepared with questions to ask the different representatives

10 Questions to ask at a college & career fair:
What type of student succeeds at your school/in your environment? How many students live on campus? What are the typical class sizes? How diverse is your campus/program?

11 Questions to ask at a college & career fair:
Is there an Honors program? What are the admission requirements? ACT scores? GPA? What skills are employers looking for? Other than FAFSA, how do I apply for scholarships? Of course these are examples and you may want to ask questions more specific to what is important to you in choosing a college/career.

12 During the College/Career Fair
Bring notebook and pen to write down information you receive as you speak to reps and employers. Ask Questions!!!! This is your chance to get some very good information about a college/career.

13 During the College/Career Fair
Scan your barcode to get on the school’s mailing list (see information in last slide) Leave time for browsing- after you see the schools/employers you wanted to see, look around at ones that you may not know as much about but look interesting.

14 During the College/Career Fair
Be independent!!! Even if several friends plan to visit the same college booth, don’t all go together. Take your time!!! Don’t rush through the exhibits. There will be lots of colleges and careers represented. Make sure you see everything you want to see.

15 Registering for the Fair Online
The benefit of doing this is that students can have their personal data shared accurately and securely without having to fill out a card at a table. It also allows more time to ask questions and speak with the representatives.
