1 Assistive Technology Data Collection
Hello, Hello, In this presentation we are going to venture into the land of data collection.

2 Gathering Information
SETT Framework SETT Framework/ Marsye KaplanSETT Framework 11/30/2018 Gathering Information What tasks needs to be performed? What change is expected? How- document change? How- identify the change? Realistic expectations? Let’s begin with thinking about what information needs to be gathered. We’ll start as we always do with a elements of the SETT Framework. What tasks need to be performed by the student? With the tasks in mind and the student’s strengths and needs, what changes do we expect? Now, how can we document the change? What will the change look like? How will we identify the change. The final criteria is to make sure that the expectations are realistic given the student in the setting. 11/30/2018 Marsye Kaplan

3 Importance of Collecting Data
SETT Framework SETT Framework/ Marsye KaplanSETT Framework 11/30/2018 Importance of Collecting Data Accuracy of memory varies Recording information is more accurate Collected information can be reviewed The importance of having a definitive method for collecting data cannot be ignored. It is a known fact that our memories vary. You may observe an activity and believe that you will recall the details without a problem. The challenge comes when you see many children and/or teachers before you get a chance to write down what you ‘recall!’ When we take the time to record information immediately, we have greater accuracy. This also provides an opportuntiy for the collected information to be reviewed! 11/30/2018 Marsye Kaplan

4 Importance of Collecting Data
SETT Framework SETT Framework/ Marsye KaplanSETT Framework 11/30/2018 Importance of Collecting Data Data is observable/measurable Comparison of before and after data Trial period/extended evaluation When determining how and what to collect, be sure that the data you are looking at is observable and measureable. You will want to be able to compare pre and post information. I am an advocate for trial periods or extended evaluation periods. It is difficult to make a firm commitment on a recommended strategy or tool without a trial period. 11/30/2018 Marsye Kaplan

5 Data Answers the Questions
SETT Framework SETT Framework/ Marsye KaplanSETT Framework 11/30/2018 Data Answers the Questions Problem? Current performance? Tools help resolve the problem? Tools effective? Meeting the students needs? The question you will want to pose and answer include: What is the problem? What is the student’s current performance related to the issue? What tools have been implemented to try to resolve the problem? Were the tools effective? Are the student’s needs being met? 11/30/2018 Marsye Kaplan

6 SETT & Re-SETT process continues…….
SETT Framework SETT Framework/ Marsye KaplanSETT Framework 11/30/2018 SETT & Re-SETT process continues……. Evaluation Recommendation Data Collection As you think about your student and determining if what you have recommended is truly appropriate, you’ll want to use the Re-SETT process. This cycle shows how the evaluation process leads towards recommendations and then of course data collection. Once data has been collected we cycle back. It may not be immediately, but if you are recommending a piece of technology to support a student, you must always go back to make sure it continues to be appropriate. 11/30/2018 Marsye Kaplan

7 SETT Framework/ Marsye KaplanSETT Framework
11/30/2018 ReSETT- Student focus Operational Competence Functional Competence Strategic Competence Social Competence As in the technology integration planning, we want to make sure we are considering the four (4) levels of technology competence for our students and staff: Operational: How to operate Functional: Knowledge of the skills necessary for using the tool in the educational setting Strategic: Integration into the instructional setting and using the tool or strategy in real world situations Decide when to use Which strategy to use Social: This is the highest level of comfort and functional, interactive use. 11/30/2018 J.Light Marsye Kaplan

8 ReSETT- Environmental focus
SETT Framework SETT Framework/ Marsye KaplanSETT Framework 11/30/2018 ReSETT- Environmental focus Implementation plan Student training Equipment Training others General environment As we ReSett with regard to the environmental focus, it is recommended that an implementation plan be developed. This may need to occur each time the student goes into a new classroom or school setting. We often have to complete a new implementation plan during the year when new staff come into the picture. Please refer to the sample plan on the ELC. 11/30/2018 Marsye Kaplan

9 SETT Framework/ Marsye KaplanSETT Framework
11/30/2018 ReSETT-Task focus Barriers to performance Tools needed to remove barriers ‘Powerful Participation’ When and how Cues to support learning Considering the tasks, there may be new barriers to performance that may need to be removed. We always want to move our students towards more powerful participation within their education setting. 11/30/2018 Marsye Kaplan

10 SETT Framework/ Marsye KaplanSETT Framework
11/30/2018 ReSETT-change Major area(s) expected change Minimum criteria for success Undermining factors What data collected How, when and by whom—data Data collection assists in identifying the major areas of expected change. When developing a collection plan, one needs to know what constitutes the minimum criteria for success and the undermining factors. 11/30/2018 Marsye Kaplan

11 ReSETT- Putting It All Together
SETT Framework SETT Framework/ Marsye KaplanSETT Framework 11/30/2018 ReSETT- Putting It All Together Ongoing process Revisiting Update Expand Student changes As you develop your plan, keep in mind that it is most definitely an ongoing process, one that will need to be revisited as changes are seen in student performance. 11/30/2018 Marsye Kaplan

12 SETT Framework/ Marsye KaplanSETT Framework
11/30/2018 Summary Identify problem Student, Environment, Tasks and Tools must be examined. Team decision Data must be collected to document the effectiveness of change. Bringing this together, in summary, you will want to make certain that you: Identify and specify the problem, Use the SETT framework for gathering pertinent data Include the team in the decision making process Collect data to document the effectiveness of change. 11/30/2018 Marsye Kaplan

13 SETT Framework/ Marsye KaplanSETT Framework
11/30/2018 Tomorrow New strategy New look at your kids New approach to collaboration New levels of success for student achievement! Feel better about you!!! As this tour of data collection draws to a close, by embracing the strategy of gathering of important data, you will have a new look at your kids, a new approach to collaboration, the greater opportunity for new levels of success for student achievement and most definitely feeling better about yourself for bringing your students to new heights! 11/30/2018 Marsye Kaplan
