7 What is religion? Religion can be defined in many ways but usually involves one or more of these things: the worship of a God or gods guidelines about how to behave answers to life's biggest questions

8 Religion Origin of religion can generally be traced to the ancient Near East and classified in 3 categories: Polytheistic Pantheistic Monotheistic

9 Polytheism Originated with Hinduism about 2500 BC
Bhagavad Gita revealed that many gods were subject to a supreme Brahman god Also the religion of many other ancient cultures: Assyria, Babylonia, Egypt, Greece and Rome Gods in control of all natural events such as rainfall, harvests and fertility Believed in sacrifices to appease their gods

10 Pantheism Principle that god is everything, and everything is god; therefore, nature is also part of god Mankind is no different than any other animal. We must live in harmony with nature, understand and learn from animals, focusing on the relationship between mankind and the elements of nature. The universe itself is divine typified in the Animism beliefs of the African and Native American cultures the later Egyptian religion under the Pharoahs Buddhism, Confucianism, & Taoism in the cultures of the Far East
