Project title: An A-train Integrated Aerosol, Cloud, and Radiation Data Product Project Team: Seiji Kato Bruce A. Wielicki Sunny Sun-Mack, Walt Miller, Fred Rose, David Winker, Graeme Stephens, Thomas Charlock, Paul Stackhouse, William Collins, Patrick Minnis, Norman Loeb, Kuan-man Xu Science Issue: uncertainty in detecting aerosol layers close to clouds and overlapping cloud layers by passive instruments and their radiative effects. Approach: Use active sensors to detect aerosol and cloud layers. Use CERES to assess the radiative effects. Satellite-based data: CALIPSO, CloudSat, CERES, and MODIS Other Data: GEOS, NSIDC snow map Models: Radiative transfer model Study objectives: Understand aerosol-cloud and multi-layer cloud radiative effects. Project status Year 1 : Developed CALIPSO-CloudSat-MODIS merging algorithm (See a conference paper by Mack et al Made draft of the data catalog. Now: Merging CALIPS-CloudSat-MODIS with CERES NEWS linkages: Linkage will be on the NEWS web site once data are available. The data set will be called C3M (CALIPSO, CloudSat, CERES, and MODIS). Cloud occurrence derived from 1 month (April 2007) of CALIPSO CloudSat merged data
