Document No: GSC17-PLEN-45 Source: TIA Contact: Cheryl Blum GSC Session: Plenary Agenda Item: 6.11 Cloud Computing Cheryl Blum VP, Technology and Standards TIA

2 Overview of Activity Recent Activities
Creation of Cloud Computing Task Force to explore and study the technology and identify standardization opportunities Release of TIA Cloud Computing White Paper summarizing and identifying work initiatives for several TIA committees Establishment of Cloud Computing Subcommittee which hosts monthly calls to coordinate TIA’s cloud computing-related initiatives

3 Strategic Direction Liaisons & Partnerships
Establish working partnerships with other SDOs and industry consortia focused on cloud computing Bridging the Virtual to the Physical Much of the hype surrounding cloud computing resides at the virtual layer but the physical infrastructure is equally important Coordination with cloud service providers Demonstrate the benefits of standards-based data centers that support cloud computing; determine proven CSP practices to transfer to standards

4 Strategic Direction Focus on interoperability between TIA standards (M2M, telecom, data centers, healthcare, security) and Cloud standards Revise or provide addendums to existing TIA standards to support cloud adoption (942-A-1 is a good example) Continue to make the CCSC a hub for collaboration and information sharing amongst TIA members and engineering committee participants interested in cloud computing

5 Challenges Coordinating with cloud service providers
Developing industry relationships with major cloud service providers Focus on interoperability between TIA standards (M2M, telecom, data centers, healthcare, security) and Cloud standards Fragmented standards for M2M, healthcare, and security; TIA is currently working to develop industry-led standards for these technologies, however cloud interoperability has yet to be addressed in the work plans of various TIA committees

6 Next Steps / Actions Pursue liaison relationships with other SDOs and consortia that align with TIA’s strategic direction Develop outreach via blogs, articles, and speaking opportunities to discuss the significance of standards-based physical infrastructure in support of cloud computing Utilize existing relationships with equipment manufacturers and TIA engineering committee participants to develop relationships with cloud service providers Monitor the development of cloud standards and both continue to work on existing engineering committee work-items as well as introduce new items related to cloud computing

7 Supplementary Slides

8 TIA Standards and Outreach Related to Cloud Computing
TIA Cloud Computing White Paper Release of ANSI/TIA-942-A-1, Cabling Guidelines for Data Center Fabrics Addendum, which specifies telecommunications cabling guidelines for newer switch fabric architectures that support cloud computing Press release: Article “Ensure Cloud Uptime with Common Standards for Data Center Designs”
