1 Please get out the picture you brought from home
Please get out the picture you brought from home. If you forgot to bring a picture, come up to the front and see me. Using the scissors that are in the basket at the front of the classroom, each of you cut your picture into about pieces of unequal shapes. You have about 6 minutes. Now trade with somebody on the other side of the classroom. You have about 8 minutes to re-assemble the picture. Use the glue sticks at the front of the classroom to glue it to a new sheet of paper. Now meet up with the person you traded with and each of you explain the 3 most helpful things you used when re-assembling your puzzle. Please return your glue sticks and any other supplies you used to their home and then return to your seats.

2 Continental Drift Theory
Alfred Wegener

3 A bit of background… Alfred Wegener was a German Geophysicist who did most of his work in the early 1900’s. In 1915, he proposed the theory of continental drift. As he studied the earth, he couldn’t help but notice an idea very new to the scientific community. The major landmasses seemed to look as if they would fit right together like a jigsaw puzzle.

4 His evidence to back up his theory…
Matching Continental Margins Geological Coorelations Mountain Ranges

5 His evidence to back up his theory…

6 His evidence to back up his theory…
Matching Continental Margins Geological Coorelations Mountain Ranges Distribution of Fossil Species Distribution of Living Species

7 His evidence to back up his theory…
Matching Continental Margins Geological Coorelations Mountain Ranges Distribution of Fossil Species Distribution of Living Species Paleoclimatology Ancient Glacial Deposits Ancient Coral Reefs Ancient Rainforests Ancient Evaporites

8 His theory was not accepted… Why?
He lacked a mechanism for the movement of the plates. He suggested some possibilities of how the continents “plowed” through the ocean crust: The gravity of the moon pulled the continents around Earth is spinning and the continents can’t keep up Centrifugal force None of these turned out to be correct so the theory was rejected but a lot of the ideas in it became evidence for the theory of plate tectonics.
