SCIENTIFIC METHOD
2
SCIENTIFIC METHOD Is there only one method?
No, there are several versions Some have more steps than others But all start with the identification of a problem or question It provides an organized method for carrying out an experiment What is the scientific method? Process that is used to find answers to questions about the world around us
3
Step 1 Identify the problem What do you want to know or explain
Use observations you have made to write a question that addresses the problem or topic you want to investigate
4
Your Turn Based on the pickle lab, what was the problem?
Based on the fish lab, what was the problem?
5
Step 2 Form a hypothesis What do you think will happen?
Predict the answer to your question or the outcome of the experiment If….then statement
6
What is a hypothesis? It is an educated guess based on observations and your knowledge of a subject
7
Your Turn Based on the pickle lab, what was one hypothesis that you could have come up with? Based on the fish lab, what was one hypothesis that you could have had?
8
Step 3 Create an experiment How will you test your hypothesis?
Develop a procedure for a reliable experiment and address safety rules
9
Your Turn Based on the either the pickle or fish lab, what were the step by step procedures that you carried out or would carry out?
10
During the Experiment You must have the following items: Control group
Experimental group Independent variable Dependent variable Control variables
11
What is a control group? It is the group in the experiment that stays the same and is what you compare your results to; It is not tested
12
Your Turn Based on the pickle lab, what was your control group
Based on the fish lab, what was your control group?
13
What is a experimental group
It is the group that is being tested and includes what you are testing or the reason for the experiment
14
Your Turn Based on the pickle lab, what was your experimental group?
Based on the fish lab, what was your experimental group?
15
What is an independent variable?
It is the variable in the experiment that is directly manipulated or changed Located on the X-axis
16
Your Turn Based on the pickle lab, what was your independent variable?
Based on the fish lab, what was your independent variable?
17
What is a dependent variable?
It is the variable in the experiment that changes because of the independent variable Located on the Y-axis This is the variable that is measured
18
Your Turn Based on the pickle lab, what was your dependent variable?
Based on the fish lab, what was your dependent variable?
19
What are control variables?
They are the variables in the experiment that never change They stay the same in every trial in every group
20
Your Turn Based on the pickle lab, what were your control variables?
Based on the fish lab, what were your control variables?
21
Step 4 Perform an experiment
Follow the steps in your procedure to perform your experiment Record data and observations
22
What is data? It is information gathered during an experiment
23
Step 5 Record and Analyze the data Is the data reliable?
Does your data and observations from the experiment support your hypothesis?
24
Step 6 If yes Communicate the results If no Modify the experiment
