1 The Foundations of a Spirit-Directed Life
Acts 18:24-28

2 Introduction Acts 18. What we will skip: The incident of Gallio the proconsul Our Study on Acts 18

3 The market-place ministry of Aquila and Priscilla
The resilience of Paul serving the Corinthians The remarkable ministry of Apollos who exemplifies more of what it means to live a Spirit-Directed life the closer he got to the Word of God.

4 Some people incorrectly pose a difference between the written Word (logos) and the spoken word (rhema). It is the same Holy Spirit who speaks.

5 The closer we get to the written Word of the Holy Spirit as the foundation of our life, the clearer we become of the spoken word of the Holy Spirit.

6 A life that is not built on the foundation of the Word of the Holy Spirit is characterized by confusion, striving, discontent, ineffectiveness, aimlessness.

7 A life that is not built on the foundation of the Word of the Holy Spirit is characterized by confusion, striving, discontent, ineffectiveness, and aimlessness.

8 Likewise a church that is not built of the foundation of the Word of the Holy Spirit is characterized by confusion, striving, discontent, ineffectiveness, and aimlessness.

9 The Foundation of Word of God
Not constitution Not country regulations (though we do not oppose unnecessarily) Not tradition Not personal preferences

10 “6 Now, brothers and sisters, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying: “Nothing beyond what is written.” (1 Corinthians 4:6, CSB)

11 Apollos is not from Apollo (a deity in Greco-Roman religion)
Apollos is not from Apollo (a deity in Greco-Roman religion). It is the abbreviation of Apollonius, meaning “the learned one.”

12 When Scripture is your foundation, you become bold in the Holy Spirit
Acts 18 24 Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures

13 Apollos was an able man “learned” (logios from logos). A man of letters. | Also, eloquent. a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures”

14 Apollos was a true believer
Acts 18 25 He had been instructed in the way/Way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor (in spirit/Spirit) and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John.

15 Apollos was a bold man Acts 18 26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue.” Without boldness, all our ability wasted.

16 How we become bold in the Holy Spirit
A true believer Boldness comes with eloquence which can be learned Boldness comes with knowledge Boldness comes with passion

17 Boldness and passion Passion for the cause Passion for the people E.g. of right passion.

18 John 1138 Jesus was still angry as he arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance. NLT) When Jesus went to the tomb of Lazarus

19 When Scripture is your foundation, your become eager for Scriptural Truth
Acts 18 26  … When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately.

20 What about our learning?
Pride gets in the way of learning Learn. Unlearned. Relearn. If you are not learning anything new, you in spiritual rut, spinning your wheels.

21 Be the Spirit-Directed Learner
Learn new propositional truth. Learn how to live-out truth. Learn to do, not just head knowledge.

22 James 1 22 But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 Because if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like someone looking at his own face in a mirror … and immediately forgets what kind of person he was.

23 James 1  25 But the one who … is not a forgetful hearer but a doer who works—this person will be blessed in what he does. (CSB)

24 When Scripture is your foundation, you serve in the power of the Holy Spirit
Apollos served in the power of the Holy Spirit

25 27 When Apollos wanted to go to Achaia, the brothers and sisters encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. When he arrived, he was a great help to those who by grace had believed. 28 For he vigorously refuted his Jewish opponents in public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Messiah.

26 “What I am saying is this: One of you says, “I belong to Paul,” or “I belong to Apollos,” or “I belong to Cephas,” or “I belong to Christ.” (1 Corinthians 1:12)

27 “For whenever someone says, “I belong to Paul,” and another, “I belong to Apollos,” are you not acting like mere humans?” (1 Corinthians 3:4) “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.” (1 Corinthians 3:6).

28 Serving in the power and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit
How we appoint pastors today.

29 “Now about our brother Apollos: I strongly urged him to come to you with the brothers, but he was not at all willing to come now. However, he will come when he has an opportunity.” (1 Corinthians 16:12).

30 Serving in partnership is not a surrender to think independently, but it is the surrender to think only as an individual without consideration of the co-workers.

31 Conclusion The impact in your life include: peace and harmony, mental keenness, spiritual power, passion for the right things, will to do what is good and right. So much for so little effort!

To me He hath made known Nor why, unworthy, Christ in love Redeemed me for His own 1/8

To keep that which I’ve committed Unto Him against that day 2/8

35 I know not how this saving faith To me He did impart
Nor how believing in His Word Wrought peace within my heart 3/8

36 But I know whom I have believed And am persuaded that He is able
To keep that which I’ve committed Unto Him against that day 4/8

37 I know not how the Spirit moves Revealing Jesus through the Word
Convincing men of sin Revealing Jesus through the Word Creating faith in Him 5/8

38 But I know whom I have believed And am persuaded that He is able
To keep that which I’ve committed Unto Him against that day 6/8

39 I know not when my Lord may come At night or noonday fair
Nor if I walk the vale with Him Or meet Him in the air 7/8

To keep that which I’ve committed Unto Him against that day 8/8
