The work due for today is…
FLIP LEARNING TASKS: Due today: The work due for today is… Find out what the following are: The Act in Restraint of Appeals The Act of Supremacy The Act of Succession The Treason Act Who was Archbishop Thomas Cranmer? What role did he play in helping Henry VIII gain a divorce from Catherine of Aragon?

In what ways and how effectively was England governed under Henry VIII?
Good learning: Understand Henry’s break with Rome and the establishment of Royal supremacy Great learning: Explain how the break with Rome affected Henry VIII’s powers as King Even better: Evaluate the impact of the break with Rome Key Words: How effectively did the Tudors restore and develop the powers of the monarchy? In what ways and how effectively was England governed during this period? How important was the role of key individuals and groups and how were they affected by developments?

How was Henry able to get his divorce from Catherine?
As we saw last lesson Wolsey had tried to gain Henry a divorce and had failed, though this was because there was no easy solution. The person to immediately take his place was a man called Sir Thomas More. Considered as a poor replacement for Wolsey, More had a reputation of putting his principles above anything else. He held very strong humanists beliefs which he expressed in his books, such as Utopia (1516). Whilst his writings were very much favoured by Henry VIII, More was very sympathetic of Catherine and of Henry’s treatment of her, as well as his willingness to support those who wanted Church reforms as a way of obtaining his divorce. More was critical of some aspects of the Catholic Church, but like other humanists he remained convinced that reform could be achieved by steady persuasion rather than by drastic action. The fact that More was a man of high and rigid principles, especially with religious matters, meant that there were some real difficulties with his relationship with Henry as the divorce remained unresolved. As Chancellor, More was able to attack Lutheran influences within the Church, but struggled due to Anne Boleyn’s presence within the court. Despite More’s efforts, between 1529 and 1534 two clear objectives emerged: To obtain the divorce that he desired (to be achieved by putting pressure on the on the clergy and Pope Clement VII not to oppose him) A move towards actually challenge the Pope over who should take control of the English Church. No longer able to support Henry, More eventually resigned from his post in 1532. Add in slide – initial ideas on who is responsible for break. Parliament, Cromwell, Henry, Ann Boleyn, Cranmer, reformers,

How was Henry able to get his divorce from Catherine?
TASK: Create a flow diagram as to how Henry was able to eventually gain a divorce using the information from and the handout you have been given. Use the diagram opposite to get you started… Exploiting weaknesses in the Church Use information on handout under the same heading : Increased influence of reformers Use information on page 69 and first two paragraphs on page 70 1529 – 1533: Pressure on the Clergy Use information on Page 71 for information 1529 – 1533: Pressure on the Pope Use information on Page 71 and on the handout Henry marries Anne Boleyn Use information on the handout. Handout refers to page of the Oxford textbook (Elizabeth on the front) CHALLENGE: Who is responsible for Henry VIII getting his divorce in the end? The last 2 paragraphs on page 70 talk about how Henry changed from a vague to an official policy. Read through those paragraphs again and write down the different arguments about why this was the case. Which one are you more convinced by and why?

The Role of Cromwell As we watch the following clip, I would like you to document the role of Cromwell in helping to secure the divorce by answering the following questions: 18.51 How did Henry and Cromwell try to progress the case for divorce? What is the difference between a king and an emperor? How far was Henry’s new argument a matter of religion? What was Parliament’s traditional role? How did Cromwell seek to expand this role? Why was Parliament important for this? What were the long term consequences of Cromwell’s use of Parliament? 24: What were Cromwell’s motivations for helping to obtain a divorce? How similar were these to Henry’s motives?

Establishment of Royal Supremacy: Henrician Reformation
By the end of 1534, Henry (with the help of Thomas Cromwell) passed a series of Acts of Parliament defining the nature and organisation of the Church in England. These laws systematically stripped away the pope’s control and transferred power in the key areas to the King. This was the Henrician Reformation as far as Henry was concerned – a political reformation over who controlled the Church. TASK: Using the information on your handout and also the information on page check through your flip learning and add any extra information you might have missed in green pen. Create a revision diagram, different to the one on page 74, which explains how the break with Rome affected henry VIII’s powers as King and the implications it had (use the information on page 75 to help with this)? Which act do you think was the most important in the break from Rome? Explain your answer.
7
Will everyone support the changes?
What happens next? I would like you to predict the future now that these Acts are in place and what you think might happen as a consequence to the break with Rome. Think about the following: Will everyone support the changes? Will Henry fully commit to Protestantism? What will happen to the Church? The role of Parliament Impact on foreign relations

FLIP LEARNING TASK: I would like you to watch the following clip by David Starkey ‘The Mind of A Tyrant’. (49 minutes) Make some notes on the programme ready for a quiz next lesson. It will be extremely beneficial for you to watch all parts (there are 5 in total and can all be found on Youtube). There is a good chance these will also be set as future flip learning too. The work due in for next lesson is as follows:
