September 22, 2011 Send Mitochondrion a message Poke Mitochondrion I’m suuuuuuper HyPeR TODAY yo! TOOOOO MUCH ENERGY! September 16, 2011 Information Networks: The Cell (Particularly the Cytoplasm Department) Birthday: 1857 (When I was discovered!) Political: Well what views does a platypus have? Religion: The Cell Theory Hometown: A platypus’ liver cell Mitochondrion updated their Hometown to A platypus’ liver cell. Perry the Platypus Thanks so much man! You definitely had my back today. If you hadn’t produced all that energy for my cells, I probably wouldn’t have defeated Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz. September 1, 2011 Mitochondrion I just found out that I have a lot in common with Chloroplasts. July 28,2011 Friends Mitochondrion I get called this enough, why not just change my name to the energy factory! Enough with the name calling. July 8, 2011 Ribo ATP DNA Mitochondrion is now friends with ATP and two other people. Ribo We did a great job at work today making protein. See ya tomorrow ;) July 7,2011 Cell Cytoplasm Crista

4 WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ME
MADE OF: Outer Membrane Inner Membrane Inter Membrane Cristae Ribosome DNA (Mitochondria had it’s own) Mitochondrial Matrix FUNCTIONS: 1. Converts the chemical energy stored in food into compounds that are more convenient for the cell to use 2. Produces ATP 3. Signals cellular differentiation 4. Signals cell death 5. Controls cell growth MISCELLANEOUS: Mitochondrion- Singular Form Mitochondria- Plural Form Ranges from 0.5 to 10 micrometers in diameter Mitochondria are often described as “Cellular Power Plants” because they produce the cell’s energy Most cells have only one mitochondrion, but they can have several thousand Mitochondria have their own DNA. This leads scientists to believe that Mitochondria were once single-celled organisms like bacteria In humans, almost all mitochondria come from the ovum or egg of a cell. This means that mitochondria is almost always inherited from the mother. Located: In the Cell? In Cytoplasm outside of the nucleus Type of Organelle? Nearly all eukaryotes; plants, animals, fungi, and protists
