1
MEAN ABSOLUTE DEVIATION *MAD*
2
Add them all up and Divide by the number of data
Mean: Add them all up and Divide by the number of data Absolute: The distance from zero. Always a positive number! Deviation: How something is different. In this case, from the mean.
3
MEAN The mean of the data set is its average. 5, 8, 10, 12, 13, 13, 14 Mean = 10.71
4
Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD)
The mean absolute deviation of a numerical data set is the average deviation of the data from the mean. What in the world is that?
5
How do I do that???? Step 1: Find the mean
Step 2: Subtract the mean from each data Step 3: Take the absolute value of each difference Step 4: Add it up and divide by the number of data (find the mean again!)
6
Step 3: Absolute Value (no neg sign)
MAD The numbers below are the golf scores for the UGA golf team. Find the mean absolute deviation of the data. 68, 70 , 72, 73, 74, 75 Step 1: Find the Mean Step 2: Subtract Value-Mean Step 3: Absolute Value (no neg sign) Step 4: Find the Mean Again!
7
Step 3: Absolute Value (no neg sign)
Find the MAD of the following Florida State University 2013 Football scores: 41, 62, 54, 48, 63, 51, 49, 41, 59, 59, 80, 37, 45, 31 Step 1: Find the Mean Step 2: Subtract Value-Mean Step 3: Absolute Value (no neg sign) Step 4: Find the Mean Again!
8
Step 3: Absolute Value (no neg sign)
Find the MAD of the following set of test scores. You Try! 70, 73, 74, 74, 81, 88, 89, 90, 92, 95, 96 Step 1: Find the Mean Step 2: Subtract Value-Mean Step 3: Absolute Value (no neg sign) Step 4: Find the Mean Again!
