2 What did we look for in a college?
Affordability Location Majors Community or Campus area Ranking/Prestige Sports + scholarships Overall atmosphere First Speaker: JG: I mainly focused on the first three. In total, I applied to nine schools.

3 What should YOU look for in a college?
First Speaker:

4 Majors Look for schools that: Advice: Offer interesting majors
Avoid applying to colleges as an undeclared major Be aware of impacted majors Focus on what you like, not the payout at the end First Speaker: Advice First bullet -CSUs admit by your intended major. The more impacted the major, the harder it gets to get in -Impacted schools such as CSULB and Cal poly slo -Each major has its own eligibility index -CSUs prioritize admission based on whether or not your high school is in its “service area” -Easier to switch into the major you want to go into Second bullet Do not select a major that you are not interested in JUST because itll give you a greater chance of getting a job in the future that pays a lot. JD: Pick a major that has certain qualities you find interesting and truly enjoy.

5 Campus Location and Size
In state or out of state? Small private college or large public research university? Living in dorms or at home? How would the surrounding area affect your experience? First Speaker:

6 Cost of Attendance and Scholarships
In-state public universities are generally cheaper than public university tuition What type of aid does the school offer? Government Funding (Cal Grants, Loans) Institutional Grants (Work study, merit-based) Scholarships (merit-based, need-based, sports) FILL OUT YOUR FAFSA!! First Speaker: I can present this entire slide if you guys are unfamiliar with financial aid and stuff - jenyfel A private school could cost $60k a year while a public university would only cost $30k a year. Some private schools offer better financial aid ( ie. the Ivys will cover your entire tuition if your family income is under a certain amount) In state students get better aid from in state public schools while private schools tend to offer the same institutional aid no matter what part of the country you're from. Government Funding Cal Grants (A, B, C) Loans (Subsidized, Unsubsidized) Institutional Grants Work Study (ie. Jenyfel got offered work study at the school she plans on attending and that goes towards paying off tuition) Merit based scholarships (UCs are known for something called Regent Scholarships. Amounts vary and it is based off of your academic merit NOT your financial need) Fill out your FAFSA! You won’t know what you can get in scholarships and loans unless you apply. If you plan on applying a school in the UC system and your family’s income is less than $80,000 a year, you qualify for the Blue and Gold program that pays for your tuition. The UCs also offer the Middle Class scholarship for families whose income and assets are under $156,000 a year. ALL OF THIS IS DETERMINED BY FAFSA SO YOU NEED TO APPLY. You won’t know what you can get in scholarships and loans unless you apply. Its free and filling it out is very easy.

7 Campus Activities Look for schools that have clubs and organizations that you are interested in (Circle K, fraternities, sororities) Consider sports, school spirit, and student body involvement First Speaker: The right college for you will always be offering different activities and events for you to participate in. TRANSITION TO NEXT TOPIC: Now that you have a small list of what you should consider, now it's time to find colleges that you want to apply to from each tier that fulfill your requirements.

8 3 Tiers: Safety, Match, Reach Schools
Safety: your academic credentials are above the average admitted freshman Match: your academic credentials meet the the average admitted freshman profile Reach: your academic credentials fall below the school’s average profile for admitted freshmen First Speaker: Safety: Match: Reach: These schools include the Ivies, MIT, Stanford, and all the other schools that my asian parents would have loved for me to attend. Reach schools are intimidating but i encourage you to not hesitate about applying. My dream school, USC, is a reach school for me. Unfortunately I did not apply because I didn’t take my SAT Subject Tests and I hesitated. So please, learn from me and apply to your dream school regardless of the acceptance rate.

9 Finding Schools to Apply to
Sign up for websites such as princetonreview.com, prepscholar.com, and niche.com Don’t ignore those s that colleges send to you! Ask your peers Research, research, research! First Speaker: First bullet: browse through thousands of colleges, make your own lists of schools you're interested, and even calculate your chances of getting admitted. Second Bullet: Often times, if a school is repetitively ing you, they’ll offer you a fee waiver to apply, priority scholarship and admissions consideration, and many other benefits Third Bullet: I did a lot of research on where I wanted to apply to. Your “top choice” is gonna change a lot during the application process/throughout highschool (I went from Davis to UCLA to UCI to finally UCSD)
