3 Course Description: This course offers a feast for the student who wishes to trace the development of the United Kingdom and understand the influences that shaped today’s modern world. This course will explore the inner workings of literature, philosophy, art, music and the impact of modern and historical events. Students will complete the Senior Project as part of the second semester of this course.

5 The British “Canon” It is a term used widely to refer to a group of literary works that are considered the most important of a particular time period or place. So…what makes something worthy of this title?

Entertainment “It will portray exciting battles, mysteries, monsters” and “assuage loneliness” Experience: “Opportunity to experience things you might not in regular life with imagery written in so you can FEEL it with the characters” Cultural Education: “…making me aware of other cultures and lifestyles than my own. It shows how we are similar, and also how we differ---maybe in ways we do not commonly realize.” Travel: “It may, perhaps, inspire a desire to travel or simply allow me to travel to places not available today from the comfort of my own couch.” Expand Vocabulary: “It will hopefully give me the words to better express my own emotions and experiences.” Language Learning: “…shows how our language has changed over time. We might be able to better understand the idiosyncrasies of common dialects that derived from it” Historical Warning:“teach us to not repeat mistakes of the past” Inspire: “The stories may inspire my creativity and imagination” Ethics: “It will teach life lessons through the themes and morals the authors choose to portray. It might show me ways to improve my own life.” Differing Perspectives: “It should help me to better understand others, by putting me in their shoes as a reader. Ultimately it can make me more empathetic.” Multiple Perspectives: “Connects to and helps me better understand other subject areas I am interested in, but in an entertaining and thought- provoking way that only a story/’narrative’ can” (students noted such areas as psychology, history and science) START HERE

9 Grading Criteria Methods and Evaluations used in this classroom to improve our writing and interpretation and speech will include: Tests, Essays, Projects ( points) Quarterly Exams Essays Individual and Group Projects and Presentations Scheduled Quizzes and Classwork (30-50 points) Homework and Pop Quizzes (10-20 points) 

10 In addition to reading classic literature, you demonstrate the following English-Related life skills: Multi-Disciplinary Thinking and Creativity Effective Communication Successful Collaboration Research Methods Self-Directed Organization and Planning Successful Interview/ Presentation Preparation and Execution

11 Supplies to Collect Course Text: Adventures in English Literature (classroom copy) Graduation Project Manual ( coming soon) 3 ring binder (handouts will be hole-punched and ALL must be kept until the end of the semester/year). Pencils, erasers, and pens (one black and one colored) Highlighters Supplies for portfolio
