1 Unit: Operations with Rational Numbers
Video # 4 Learning Target: I can simplify expressions using the order of operations (with absolute value).

2 What is absolute value? Absolute value is a number’s distance from 0 on a number line. It is represented with two bars: To find the absolute value of a number simply make the number positive If it is already positive leave it alone! Ex: *If there is a negative on the outside of the absolute value, your answer is negative. Ex. - |11| = -11 Ex. - |-4| = - 4

3 Examples: Find the absolute value. |4| Find the absolute value. |-5|
Compare using <, >, or =.   |-10| |-7|  |-8| -|4|  |-3| |11| |-2| |2| 4 5 -6 10 > 7 8 > -4 3 < 11 2 = 2

4 Order of Operations PEMDAS!! P- Parentheses E- Exponents
M/D- Multiplication/Division (whichever comes first from left to right) A/S- Addition/Subtraction (whichever comes first from left to right) *Absolute value signs should be treated like parentheses and done first *If there is a fraction, simplify the top and bottom separately, then treat the fraction as division

5 Example: 56-15  8 + 14 = 2 41  8 + 14 = 41  /2 = = 335 3+ -12- 4  7 = 8 3+ -16  7 = /8  7 =  7 = = 17
