11 Examples of strong leadership occur in many countries.
LEADERSHIP AT ALL LEVELS: PREREQUISITE FOR ENDING AIDS NATIONAL LEADERSHIP Examples of strong leadership occur in many countries. Brazil has many leading manufacturers of ARVs. Thailand’s massive public information campaign and condom programmes for the sex industry. In South Africa, the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) success in the provision of anti-retroviral drugs. Elimination of mother to child transmission has been achieved with WHO validation in Caribbean and other countries At the country level, examples of leadership from the history of HIV/AIDS point both to what can be accomplished through strong leadership in the national responses of Brazil, Thailand, Uganda; South Africa and of course of my country Ghana. Brazil has many of the leading manufacturers of ARVs, which has helped the country to ensure that drug responses are cost effective and efficient. Brazil is one of the first 40 countries to provide self-testing. In Thailand, for example, a strong leadership response in the early 1990s that included a multisectoral HIV/AIDS policy, a massive public information campaign and condom programmes for the sex industry effectively prevented the epidemic from raging out of control. In South Africa, the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) chalked one of its most significant victories in 2002 when the Constitutional Court ruled and ordered the South African government to provide anti-retroviral drugs to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
