Customary Units of Capacity
Capacity is the amount of liquid or substance that a container can hold. The customary units of capacity are, in order from smallest to largest: Cup Pint Quart Gallon

Unit Equivalencies * This silly story can help you remember the units of capacity and their equivalencies. There once was a big kingdom called GALLON. In the Kingdom of GALLON, there were 4 Queen QUARTS. Each Queen Quart had 2 sons, all named Prince PINT. Each Prince PINT had 2 child CUPS to drink from.

Cups and Pints 1 Pint = 2 Cups How many cups are in 2 pints?

Quarts 1 Quart = 2 Pints How many pints are in 2 quarts?
Think about it…. If Marissa’s mom wants to give 8 children each a pint of milk. How many quarts should she buy?

Gallons Gallons are the largest unit of capacity. They are used to measure large amounts of liquid. You can buy milk or other drinks in gallon containers. Gasoline (gas) is measured in gallons in the United States. 1 Gallon = 4 Quarts How many quarts are in 4 gallons? If there are 2 pints in a quart, how many pints are there in one gallon?
