The ATOM
2
All matter is made of atoms.
Parts of an Atom All matter is made of atoms. Each and every atom has three parts, called subatomic particles. Proton Neutron Electron
3
Properties of Subatomic Particles
Parts of an Atom Properties of Subatomic Particles Particle Symbol Location Relative Electric Charge Relative Mass Actual Mass (g) Proton Neutron Electron
4
Parts of an Atom There are many different types of atoms. The type of atom is called an element. The number of protons determines which element that atom is.
5
Types of Atoms: Elements
Since the number of protons determines which element that atom is, this number of protons has a special name. Atomic number: The number of protons in an atom. Since ALL atoms are neutral (If they aren’t neutrally charged, they have a special name), the atomic number of an atom also tells us the number of __________ in the atom.
6
Types of Atoms: Elements
The Periodic Table of Elements lists all the different types of atoms (elements) in order of their atomic number.
7
Types of Atoms: The Periodic Table
A row on the periodic table is called a ________. A column on the periodic table is called a ________. Elements in the same group have similar chemical properties.
8
HOMEWORK MEMORIZE THE FIRST TWENTY ELEMENTS OF THE PERIODIC TABLE.
NAME CHEMICAL SYMBOL ATOMIC NUMBER Periodic table song (in order)
