2. You woke up this morning and your little brother had eaten all the cereal. You need to run to the grocery store to pick up Frosted Flakes. Explain how you would tell someone where to get the Frosted Flakes from.

4. Taxonomy -The science of classification is called taxonomy
-Taxonomist are like living organism detectives searching for new organisms and trying to find where they belong

5. How has Taxonomy Changed?
-The way we group organisms has changed over time because we know so much more about animals/plants etc than we did before
-Technology allows us to see relationships

6. Old Method: Aristotle
Old method invented in the 300’s BC was by philosopher named Aristotle, he called his method the Ladder of nature grouping organisms from most complex to least complex
He didn’t have a microscope so he was leaving out a huge group of organisms
2 Original Kingdoms:
Animals
Blood
Live Babies
Laid Eggs
No Blood
Plants

7. Old Method: Aristotle
At this point there was no method for naming organisms
Each scientist used his own method based on what he thought was most important
Ex. Animal furry bark; Animal furry meow

8. Linneaus Carl Von Linne: created a universal system for
naming organisms
Everyone would use the
same names

9. Linneaus Created a category with the most diversity and then made
subgroups of each
category

10. How’d we fix the naming problem?
Linneaus decided we would give each organism a two part name (sort of like us)
Called Binomial Nomenclature
