1 Personal Narrative (2 pages—double-spaced)

2 WHAT IS A PERSONAL NARRATIVE?
In a personal narrative, you re-create an incident that happened to you over a short period of time. This incident could be an emotional experience, a silly or serious event, or a frightening encounter. Be sure to include enough specific details to make the incident come alive for your readers. What is considered a short period of time?

3 CHOOSING A TOPIC TO WRITE ABOUT
First memories, lunch hour, stage fright, learning to drive, odd field trips, asking for help, the big game, the school play, a school project, last week, on the bus, learning a lesson, kind act, homesick, big mistake, a reunion, getting lost, Friday night, embarrassing moment, success, moving, practical joke, being a friend…ETC ETC ETC

4 HOOKING YOUR READER! CONSIDER THIS YOUR “GO-TO” STARTER: start in the middle of the action or introduce the people in your story and get them talking. Build the action by adding specific details, feelings, suspense—whatever it takes to pull the reader in. What are some examples of less intriguing introductory paragraphs?

7 HOW/WHEN TO USE ELLIPSIS POINTS
Use ellipsis points to mark omissions from quoted material and pauses in a written passage. How many ellipsis points do I use? Should I use them in every other sentence? What are some alternatives to using this technique? Good writing includes VARYING your sentence structure. That includes which type of punctuation you choose to use. Don’t forget about utilizing these punctuations: Dashes/Hyphens Colons Semicolons Parenthesis BUT don’t forget about STILL using the basics: Period Comma Apostrophe Quotation Marks ETC
