Why do we write? People write for different reasons or purposes.
These purposes can be grouped under types of writing.

Types of Writing Narrative Descriptive Expository Persuasive
*Note: These writing types can overlap.

Narrative Writing recounts a personal experience in the form of a story and always includes characters, setting, and plot the narrator is a character in the story Examples: short story, novel, narrative poem, journal

Descriptive Writing uses vivid images to describe a person, place, or event so that the topic can be clearly “seen” in the reader’s mind. uses imagery and vivid language Examples: menu, travel brochure, poster

Expository Writing does not include opinions
provides information that explains, clarifies, or defines does not include opinions Examples: essay, research paper, report, manual

Persuasive Writing gives an opinion using facts that attempts to convince a reader to agree with a writer’s belief Tries to get readers to see the writer’s point of view Examples: movie review, restaurant critique, letter to a newspaper editor, essay

Put P.O.W.E.R. in your writing
1.Plan=brainstorm 2.Organize=decide your topic and which details to write about 3.Write=put it on paper 4.Edit=look over your work/have it double checked by someone 5.Revise=make any necessary changes/corrections
