This poster can be used to support the development of number at home, a great resource for parents.

2. Number is everywhere! Why not introduce it when tidying up their bedroom e.g. count and stack your toys. Place the car in groups of 2s. Fold clothes into piles and count items. Match up socks and shoes into correct pairs.
Encourage problem solving such as doubling, halving and sharing through real experiences like cooking. Talk abut ingredients and amounts and share the outcome amongst family and friends.
Look at numbers in your local environment. E.g. door number, buses, timetables, number plates.
Recognise patterns e.g. door numbers going up in 2s, odd and even door numbers, bus timetables.
Numbers
Children count reliably with numbers from one to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.
Set outdoor challenges e.g. how many red cars can you see and count? Give them 1 minute. Now change the challenge e.g. black cars.
