In the early 1900’s, Russian were discontent Peasants paid high taxes Non-Russians were mistreated Middle class wanted a voice in government Urban workers upset over pay and conditions

Bloody Sunday – 1905 3,000 workers went to the square in front of the czar’s palace in St. Petersburg with a petition Government soldiers fired on the unarmed crowd killing about 1,000

Czar Nicolas II was unable to manage Russia’s ongoing difficulties and his power weakened In March 1917, workers revolted by striking and demanded bread and peace The Czar finally gave up his throne

A temporary government was set up, but it soon lost the support of the people Workers, soldiers and peasants formed soviets (committee’s to represent their interests) Bolsheviks – radical group of soviets

Bolshevik Revolution – Led by Vladimir Lenin He promised… to get Russia out of the war Give all land to the peasants Give factories to the workers Give the government to the soviets

November 1917 Bolsheviks seized the Winter Place in St. Petersburg They massacred Czar Nichols II and his family The Bolsheviks then withdrew from the Eastern Front and abandoned their allies They signed a separate peace treaty with Germany

1. Lusitania Sunk “Americans Die” 2. Zimmerman Telegram 3. Unrestricted U-Boat attacks on us merchant ships 4. British Navy blockades stop trade with Europe

10 The US Enters the War Public opinion was favorable for Britain because of our traditional connection Germany’s unrestricted use of the submarines (U-Boat) affected public opinion

11 The US Enters the War In 1915 a German U-Boat sank the British passenger ship the Lusitania Nearly 1,200 passengers died (128 Americans) President Wilson still does not enter the war ( Do not have to write ) There were 1,248 cases of artillery shells, 4,927 boxes of 1,000 bullets each and 2,000 more cases of ammunition for small guns on board the ship

13 The US Enters the War Germany was scared the US would enter the war so they restricted their use of the u-boats Wilson came up for re-election in 1915 and his slogan was “He kept us out of war”
