7. The Business of Colonization
English colonies were funded and maintained by joint-stock companies.
This allowed several investors to pool their money to support a colony to make a profit.

8. The Lost Colony of Roanoke
1587: England’s first attempt to establish a colony in North America.
Captain John White sailed back to England for supplies. When he returned in 1590, the settlement was empty. Everyone had vanished.
The word “CROATOAN” was carved into a tree.

To work their plantations, many owners imported indentured servants from England.
In exchange for passage to North America, and food and shelter upon arrival, an indentured servant agreed to a limited term of servitude-usually 4-7 years.
