Southern states leave the union because Lincoln is opposed to slavery
– a major war between the United States (“Union”) and the eleven Southern states (“Confederacy”)
1862 – Emancipation Proclamation – northern states free 4 million slaves in the south

10. Three amendments were made to the constitution
Constitutional Amendments
Three amendments were made to the constitution
13th Amendment (1865) – abolished slavery
14th Amendment (1868) – stated blacks were citizens and should have equal rights
15th Amendment (1870) – the vote should not be denied on account of race
HOWEVER, the changes do not take place overnight. These amendments were the basis for Civil Rights campaigning.
