In this study, Shin et al. (2017) show how light can be used to tune phase separation processes in the cell (e.g., from a liquid state to a solid state etc.). A light-activated tool that responds to different levels of illumination enables investigation of a range of outputs, such as physiological and pathogenic cellular states. This permits modulation of one parameter out of many that are important for phase separation. Cells are shown with examples of different phase separation processes ongoing.
