The Gospel in Galatians Our Goal To reflect on our own understanding of the gospel. Allow God’s Spirit to spark a spiritual revival in our hearts as we rediscover what God has done for us in Christ.

6 Living by the Spirit The Gospel in Galatians Lesson 12, September 16
Namumuhay sa Pamamagitan ng Espiritu

7 Living by the Spirit Key Text Galatians 5:16 ESV But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” Susing Talata.

8 flesh and Spirit in conflict
Living by the Spirit Initial Words As believers we possess two natures, the flesh and the Spirit, and they are in conflict. Although our sinful nature will always be “prone” to wander from God, if we are willing to surrender to His Spirit, we do not have to be enslaved to the desires of the flesh. flesh and Spirit in conflict Panimulang Salita.

9 1. Conflicting Desires (Galatians 5:16-18)
Living by the Spirit Quick Look 1. Conflicting Desires (Galatians 5:16-18) 2. Desires of the Flesh (Galatians 5:19-21) 3. Desires of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22, 23) 1. Mga Kagustuhang Naglalaban-laban (Galacia 5:16-18) 2. Mga Kagustuhan ng Laman (Galacia 5:19-20) 3. Mga Kagustuhan ng Espiritu (Galacia 5:22, 23)

10 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.”
Living by the Spirit 1. Conflicting Desires Galatians 5:16-18 NKJV I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.” 1.

11 Conduct in the Old Testament
1. Conflicting Desires Walking in the Spirit Walking” is a metaphor drawn from the Old Testament that refers to the way a person should behave. Conduct in the Old Testament simply was not defined as “walking” but more particularly as “walking in the law.”

12 Paul’s comments about “walking
1. Conflicting Desires Walking in the Spirit Paul’s comments about “walking in the Spirit” are not contrary to obedience to the law. The genuine obedience that God desires never can be achieved by outward compulsion but only by an inward motivation produced by the Spirit (Gal. 5:18).

13 1. Conflicting Desires The Christian Conflict The struggle refers specifically to the inward tug-of-war that exists in the Christian. Because humans are born in harmony with the desires of the flesh (Rom. 8:7), it is only when we are born anew by the Spirit that a real spiritual conflict begins to emerge (John 3:6).

14 We are literally on both sides of the battle at once.
1. Conflicting Desires The Christian Conflict We are literally on both sides of the battle at once. The spiritual part of us desires what is spiritual and detests the flesh. The fleshly part of us, however, longs for the things of the flesh and opposes what is spiritual.

15 Because the converted mind is too weak to resist the flesh by itself,
1. Conflicting Desires The Christian Conflict Because the converted mind is too weak to resist the flesh by itself, the only hope we have of subduing the flesh is by making a daily decision to side with the Spirit against our sinful selves. This is why Paul is so insistent that we choose to walk in the Spirit.

16 Living by the Spirit 2. Desires of the Flesh Galatians 5:19-21 NKJV Now the works of the flesh are…adultery, fornication, uncleanness, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissentions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries….” 2. (Galacia 5:19-21).

17 2. Desires of the Flesh Two Differences First, even though Paul contrasts the two lists, he does not refer to them in the same manner. He labels the vice list as the “works of the flesh” but the virtue list as the “fruit of the Spirit.” Dalawang Pagkaka-iba.

18 plural “works” singular “fruit”
2. Desires of the Flesh Two Differences Second, the vice list is labeled plural: “works of the flesh.” “Fruit of the Spirit,” is singular. plural “works” singular “fruit” This suggest that the life lived in the flesh can promote nothing more than division, turmoil, divisiveness, and disunity. In contrast, the life lived in the Spirit produces one fruit which manifests itself in nine qualities that foster unity.

19 Against such there is no law.”
Living by the Spirit 3. Desires of the Spirit Galatians 5:22, 23 NKJV But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.” 3.

20 3. Desires of the Spirit Relation to Ten Commandments The Ten Commandments are not an alternative to love; they help guide us in how we are to show love, both to God and to humankind. However much it might transcend the letter of the law, love is not in conflict with the law.

21 3. Desires of the Spirit The Virtue of Love Love should be seen as the cardinal Christian virtue that is the key to all other virtues. Love is the preeminent fruit of the Spirit, and it should define the life and attitudes of every Christian, however difficult at times it might be to show love.

22 1. “Walk” in the Spirit (vs 16 “to follow”). 2. “To be led” (vs 18).
Final Words Way to Victory Five key verbs that describe the type of life in which the Spirit reigns: 1. “Walk” in the Spirit (vs 16 “to follow”). 2. “To be led” (vs 18). 3. “To live” (vs 25). 4. “To walk” (vs 25 “to conform”). 5. “To crucify” (vs 24). “Pinapatnubayan” (talatang 18). 3. “Nabubuhay” (alatang 25). 4. “Lumakad” (talatang 25 “umayon”). 5. “Ipinako sa krus” (talatang 24).
